David Reiss Hey, what do folks think about superheroic prose? Such stories usually take place in a modern environment, and there are almost always fantastical elements to the powers that the heroes and villains employ. Often, the superheroes fight demons or other supernatural nasties.

Do folks think that superheroic prose (like, say, Carrie Vaughn's "After the Golden Age" or V.E. Schwab's "Vicious") would be categorized under the urban fantasy umbrella, or would some other genre be more appropriate?

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) While I feel like there's definitely some superhero/urban fantasy overlap (Ahem. Constantine/Swamp Thing/Zatanna/Thor/Doctor Strange, etc.), I keep them firmly separated in my mind.

Batman could fight next to Constantine, but Dresden? Nope. Too weird. Fae aren't really a superhero thing. Magic can be. I don't know...I need more coffee and coherent thoughts. Great question! Can't wait to see some other opinions.

I've started reading Preludes & Nocturnes (The Sandman, #1) by Neil Gaiman which has gods in it, but I count it more as horror. Although, in my mind, the boundaries tend to blur.

I guess I would agree with Holly that Batman and fae would be a strange combination. Although, if it were well-written, I'd probably read it!

Haha! Yeah, me too.

Mary Catelli | 93 comments Urban fantasy is more coherent than superhero worlds. After all, it's not all Dr. Strange. You can have aliens from outer space and superscience gadgetry.
