Jordan Cavaliero | 7 comments Every parent dreams of the perfect child. A child who does well in school, has good friends, is caring and respectful. In Crank by Ellen Hopkins, Kristina was the definition of that “perfect child”, until she went on a weekend trip to visit her father whom she knows hardly anything about.

After Kristina visited her father, she came home addicted to the “monster”, or crystal meth. As Kristina continues to be under the influence of the monster, she discovers the other side of herself. Bree, the complete opposite of Kristina, comes out while she’s high on meth. Bree takes charge and says and does things Kristina would never say or do. Bree is the uncontrollable side of Kristina. Bree brings out the worst and there is no stopping her.

Bree comes out when Kristina is high and she needs to be aggressive. Bree will do anything for meth or money to buy meth. Kristina can’t control what she says or does when Bree comes out.

The book shows all the highs and lows that someone goes through while addicted to meth. Kristina would sleep for days because she wouldn’t be able to move without meth. She wouldn’t be able to eat because her body rejected food and needed meth. She started fighting with her parents more and lying to them all of the time. Kristina turned into the complete opposite of what everyone knew her as.

Throughout the book, Kristina meets many guys and dates many of them. There are multiple guys who she thinks she loves but really she loves the meth they give her. One of the boys whom she “loved” rapes her and gets her pregnant. Now Kristina is a 17-year-old teen mom whose addicted to meth. Does having a child stop her from doing meth though?

I really enjoyed reading this book. The book was longer than any book I have read before but it is definitely one of my favorite books. I loved how the author wrote the story in different forms of poems. The poems made it an easy yet fun read. This book was very hard to put down. There were so many moments when you wondered what happens next. This book shows all the highs and lows that come with crystal meth. Not only did I enjoy this book, but I also learned a lot.
