No Apology Book Reviews (noapologybookreviews) I see others have asked for suggestions here, so if it's okay, I'd like to as well. I used to go to the Amazon Romance Forums, but those have been disabled (grrr), so I was at a lost as to where to ask and found this club.

There's a lot of references to Regency romances here, but since the name of the club is ambiguous, I'm hoping ya'll dabble in other time periods as well. I'm looking for romance novels set in medieval times/middle ages, roughly 500-1400--BUT I'd like for them to take place, at least partially, at sea. I have a bunch that take place on land/in castles, but I'm having a hard time finding ones at sea. I assume this is largely because there wasn't much ocean navigating done at that time, they stuck pretty close to shore. But I'm hoping there might be a few....

Or if anyone knows a better place for me to look/ask, please let me know :)

I really enjoy Claire Delacroix for medieval. I am not sure if any get into the sea.

Mariana | 2692 comments I am not much of a medieval romance reader. I have only read a handful, mostly for challenges.

Sorry, but I cannot think of one book that takes place on the sea that is set that far back in time. I could recommend one or the other but not a single book that meets both. You might try looking through the titles by Kathryn Le Veque. She has been recommended to me and writes a lot of medieval.

On land, I gotta recommend For My Lady's Heart by Laura Kinsale. It definitely felt the most authentic for this time of any book I have read. They do travel from Italy to England; but other than traveling by boat while the heroin is unconscious, there are no sea scenes. I have not read the second book in this duo; but based on the synopsis, Shadowheart may have some traveling by sea.

I also personally enjoyed Never Seduce a Scot by Maya Banks and The Bride and the Brute by Laurel O'Donnell.

Jan (jan130) | 2794 comments Hi, 'No Apology'. Welcome. This is a good place to look. We certainly don't stick just to Regencies.

As a suggestion for you, what about The Kadin? The Kadin by Bertrice Small

It's a while since I read it, but I think there were some sea voyages? I think it was late medieval setting. Be warned though, it's an old-school style book. A harem book too, probably with what we might consider some non-PC aspects today.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments I can’t think of a book that meets both criteria.

However, I have a suggestion: perhaps look to Viking HR? The Vikings are well-known sea-farers of the period. If memory serves, Leif Ericsson (sp) had something to do with Viking voyage to Greenland.

It is not to say that other medieval Europeans didn’t make sea voyages, but Vikings were very busy with sea voyages during Middle Ages to the point that info about their sea-going adventures has survived to present times and other Europeans who made sea voyages are lost to history?

***This is my own speculation. I’m not about to reasearch this as if I’m going to write a paper! I’m too busy reading, hanging out on GR and NOT doing my laundry!

No Apology Book Reviews (noapologybookreviews) Thanks for all the suggestions! I knew it would be tough to find the setting I want, so I'm glad for the help! I'll check these out, and look into Viking romances.

But if anyone else wants to suggest others, by all means :)

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments No Apology book review,

if you ever want suggestion for “Regular” Medieval, you have only to ask.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1635 comments Also, you might want to try the “Romance book sleuth” group.

The focus of this group is to track down a book when you have forgotten the name, but they still might be able to help.

lorii (Loriidae) | 1120 comments I want to try Kathryn Le Veque as she has such a good rep. But The Wolfe as recommended first on her webpage is 900 pages!

A while ago, there were KLV freebies and $.99 cent deals for her. I grabbed em’. But haven’t had a chance to read anything yet.

lorii (Loriidae) | 1120 comments Sorry I felt like I went off on a tangent

No Apology Book Reviews (noapologybookreviews) Oh how funny. I woke up to an email from NetGalley offering a book called Jilliand by Clare Gutierrez. It's ratings are only so-so, but part of the description is: "As a captive of the Vikings, Jilliand travels along the coast of England as they raid and plunder. Throughout her time onboard..."

That'll do, pig. That'll do.
