Patricia | 971 comments I'd like to take a minute to recognizing and remember Barbara Bush. No matter where you stand politically she must be acknowledged for her devotion to learning and literacy. She did more to bring to light the problems of illiteracy in this country than anyone ever has. Before Barbara Bush no one was aware of kids graduating from high school while still being illiterate. Think about that for a second. Illiterate high school grads. She will be missed.

Robert Burgess Friday a long retired teacher of Native Americans in Montana told me emotionally about the girl she made a special effort to help and how many years later as an adult that girl made a special effort to find the teacher just to tell her how much she had meant to her in her life...often the only recognition these "caring teachers" ever get for their efforts. I was pleased to see how much of this was detailed by the media in remembering Barbara Bush.

Yes, she will be greatly missed. She was incredibly unique. Thanks for reminding us.

Patricia | 971 comments If you are a kindle user you will find a list of free kindle books under the free book thread. I update this every day, sometimes several times a day.

The books are usually free for a very limited time, most one day so grab them quickly.

If you don't have a kindle you can still get these books with the kindle app. Just download it from your usual app store.

This is a great way to build a library, discover new authors and try out new genres you otherwise wouldn't venture into.

If you have any requests let me know. You can also do your own book searches using the sites listed under the thread titled Free Book Sites. I always recommend using ereaderiq.com. It is the best site I've found.

Happy reading.

Robert Burgess Patricia, I'm planning to make an e-book --as yet unpublished by Kindle --free for up to 10 days if I choose the entire period they allow every 90 days. I had considered three days. Is this common or do most authors prefer the one day free option?

Thanks,

Robert Burgess

Patricia | 971 comments Hmmmm It depends on the author. If it's a series some will offer the first book free forever hoping to pull the reader in. Authors like Amy Cross, Leslie Wolf, James Kipling etc who are well known and read offer the book for one day. It really depends on what you think will work best for you. A good way to go is to request the reader leave a review because the book is free. I guess this is a good or bad thing depending on the reader. I've seen some horrible reviews for stupid reasons on books I've loved. If someone doesn't like cuss words and they read it for free it's their fault in my opinion.

Have you had anyone beta read your book yet? There are some sites that offer that for free. All you have to do is provide the free book. Actually I beta read a couple and would have had to pay for them but got them free through kindle unlimited.

Is this your first book?

message 7: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 971 comments No it isn't your first book. I just looked you up. I'm going to check some of your books out. I'm a navy vet, daughter of a Pacific WWII vet and aunt of deceased Gold Star for Valor Iraq soldier.

message 8: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 971 comments Of course that should have read Bronze Star not gold. I'm suffering from brain hiccups today.

I worked with a guy that had been a tunnel day in Viet Nam for four years when I was at NSA. He had switched to intel. I'm going to buy your book about them. My dad talked about the Japanese tunnels. I imagine they were similar.

Robert Burgess WOW! Great background, Patricia. I'm lost in how to get reviews; readers etc. I lucked into the short-but-true market for Nam books.I read a lot of memoirs to get the stories. Sales for the Tunnel Tales hit 1200 a month because family members wanted to know what their Dads did but never told them. Heart-wrenching reviews thanking me keep me choked up. Those Jap tunnels were hellishly designed to catch our boys in crossfire and we never knew in advance. Terrible losses even the public never knew until after,

Am about to bring out something unusual about a family of children befriended by a dolphin they learn to talk to and the reader knows what everyone including the dog and the dolphin are thinking. Could I Gift you review copy? Need your e-mail and full name. Mine is hunterb4@gtcom.net

Patricia | 971 comments Patricia Miner p_miner@live.com. My dad never talked about the was EVER until I came back from a 2 year stint in S Korea. I was in Intel and I think because of that he thought I'd understand. He was right. N Korea is a pathetic place. I was i in S Korea the 80's. My dad was at Guadalcanal and Midway. The only difference between the Japanese and North Koreans is the Japanese believed they fought for their "god" the emporer and the North Koreans don't want to be shot in the back. Both are fanatical reasons. Both are/were equally cruel.
