Play Book Tag discussion

How to rate a book that I only understood fully once I did some research after finishing? I NOW understand it intellectually, but I felt that it was too subtle to have a great impact.

I chose this book as it is on my Listopia list of books that are eligible for the Man Booker Prize 2018. It is a story told in three parts, and I went in to the book aware of the format. I really enjoyed the first part, and had it continued I think I would have thorougly enjoyed the book as a whole!! The second part was seemingly unrelated to the first, and I found it a lot slower and had less motivation to pick it up during this section, and then the third, the shortest section, was ok and was supposed to tie it together but it still relied upon knowledge that I obviously don't possess! Once I looked it up I was able to appreciate the finesse, however for the reading experience that I personally had I can't give it more than a three.
