Now that Boston has finished its winter and entered its summer, it's time for some ideas for our book of June.
June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month as I'm sure you are aware. To honor our animal friends, our theme for June's Book of The Month is going to be

Fantastic Beasts
(Thanks Josh for the great name!)

So we are going to read a book about some animal/mysterious creatures, no hard rule except for no Scalzi this time (tough luck Alien Animal Encounters).
As we did before, just list your ideas here and we will figure out a short list in the 2nd half of this month.

My potential list so far:

His Majesty's Dragon You knew we will have dragons under the beast theme.

The Bees I'm cautious against the "hunger game cross handmaid's tale" boast though.

Josh Bob "Eyes of the Dragon" by Stephen King
"A Boy and His Dog" by Harlan Ellison

Roger Alix-Gaudreau | 3 comments Well, we get dire wolves and dragons in A Game of Thrones, but I suspect most of us have read that already.

Fool Moon centers on werewolves. It's the second book in Butcher's Dresden Files, but early enough in the series that you don't miss much if you haven't read the first one (and the first one, Storm Front is a quick read, but not really in the Fantastic Beasts category).

For a sci-fi take on the concept, Sundiver is set in a future where humanity has raised chimpanzees and dolphins to sentience and together reach out into space, where they discover a galactic civilization that frowns on what humanity has done.

I've never heard of A Boy and His Dog, so JFK survived yet WWIII still happened? get out! too bad it has only 60 pages, too short for a monthly choice, I may read it nonetheless.

I remember to have watched the Dresden Files TV show years ago (with the help of Chinese closed captions at the time), sounds like a safe choice.

Picking books with a theme is hard, but it's more fun than just pick the next book off your shelf. Let's keep the ideas coming!

Josh Bob I wouldn't say that the Dresden Files TV show is in any way representative of the books. Just FYI.

@Josh, yeah I would imagine.

btw, two more findings:
The Shape of Water I know people may prefer watching the movie, it just fit the theme too well,

The Golem and the Jinni These "creatures" sound very human-like though

I read the first 20 chapters (they are very short) of The Eyes of the Dragon, it is different than what I thought about typical Stephen King. Interesting. It might be a good change of pace after our previous sci-fi blockbuster.
The only complain I have is that the dude reading the audiobook is a bit too into it. His crow cry scared the sh** out of me while I'm driving 🤦🏻‍♂️

Glided through first couple of chapters of Fool Moon. The detective story setting is safe as I expected. Like the humor. The first couple chapters of Golem and Jinni are ... weird. Not sure what to make that book, gonna give it a couple more.
