Quidditch TournamentIt's going to be by HOUSE. Which means that all the teams that belong to a house have to work together and discuss which 7 members will be forming the House Quidditch Team.
Each house will play in three different matches, and we will have two games occurring at the same time - for example Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw vs Slytherin.
The match will last for a max of 2 weeks, or till the snitch is caught - whatever happens first.
We'll be posting rules and how to's during the next few days, so we can work out kinks and round some corners. Experience says that some things that work perfectly on paper, won't work that well after all, so, we'll see
Player Roles
We're going to have 7 players: 3 Chasers, 2 Beaters, 1 Keeper and 1 Seeker. The 4 types have pretty distinct functions. We'll start with those, one day at a time.
Seeker
The function of the Seeker is to catch the Golden Snitch. Which is kind of important, since that not only means the end of the match, it also gives the team 150 points.
So, how does it work?
We're going to hide the Golden Snitch within a book reading thread on the group. It can be a buddy read, a series read or a BOM read. Then we're going to create a puzzle (or slider, riddle, etc) that allows for the Seeker to know where to start looking.
The seeker has to find where the snitch is hidden and then read the book in question.
Points
- Solving the Riddle: 30 points | 20 points (*)
- Finding the Exact Post where the snitch is hidden: 30 points | 20 points (*)
- Reading the book : 90 points
(*)Screen Shot and link to the thread need to be sent to the Quidditch Referee (TBA), in order for the points to be given to the respective Seekers.
Book can only be started AFTER the Quidditch Referee announces that the snitch has been found. First Seeker to finish the book (and claim as finished both in specific thread and shelf) wins the 90 points for catching the snitch and match is considered as finished (no more scoring allowed).
CHASER
- The Chasers throw the Quaffle to each other and try and get it through one of the hoops to score a goal. Ten points every time the Quaffle goes through one of the hoops.
How it Works on NBRC's Quidditch
1) Spell QUAFFLE (*)
Using the spell-it-out rules, the 3 chasers need to spell QUAFFLE. Only after that they can try to score goals.
2) Score a goal.
Scoring can be done by chains of 1 player, 2 players or 3 players. Each Score is worth 10 points and each player participating (in the chain) is required to read one book.
* 1 player - read a 650+ page book
* 2 players
- Books have to be 300+ pages
- Books read need to have same title (It can be same book or different book). Example:

* 3 players: The 3 books read have to meet one of the following requirements:
- Consecutive series numbers (can be part of different series). Example Magic Burns, Iron Kissed and Marked in Flesh
- Titles start with consecutive letters. Example: Midnight Blue-Light Special, Night Broken, Orphan Number Eight
- Titles have common word between them. Example:
Blood Bound, Ties to the Blood Moon, Shopaholic Ties the Knot
KEEPER
- The Keeper have to fly around the team hoops and stop the other team from scoring
How it Works on NBRC's Quidditch
To defend a score, the Keeper needs to read one of the books from the other team's QUAFFLE, defending the goal.
Consequences:
The book read from the QUAFFLE is considered void, and the letter needs to be spelled again, otherwise the chasers can't try to score.
In order to the score to count, the books can only be started when the QUAFFLE is whole - Chasers Cannot reuse previous books.
If the Keeper "reads" the QUAFFLE, chain is broken.
Book in quaffle needs to be read again and another chain is started - Cannot reuse previous books.
BEATER
ATTACK -->
Read book read by one of the chasers.
Chaser has to stay out one score
DEFEND -->
Read same book opposite beater is reading. Chaser is safe and can proceed with the score.

SPELLSFrom the simple Nox and Lumos, to the legendary Wingardium Leviosa, and the more complex Expetrum Pattronum. Since spelling plays such an important part “It's leviOsa, not levioSA!" this will be a spell-it-out challenge. Perfect for using those quiet member books, and ensure that even slower readers can win points for the team.
RULES
For each letter read books with titles, series names, authors (first or last names) that begin with letters that correspond to the word you choose. You also can use main or secondary characters (first or last names, and also nicknames). You may ignore the indefinite and definite articles (a, an, the, etc.)

These will be open for the entire challenge and can be done in no particular order. It will grant extra points for completion BUT it will also give negative points for lack of.

Oh wow! I didn't realize we could start reading so soon. I'm so far behind the start time it'll be middle of my day off when we can start. So excited! Going to have to hold off on starting any of my reads for other challenges right now. Might have to read a couple of the shorts I've got pending to kill the time. Otherwise I might finish anything I start. It's only 4hrs-ish away. That's enough to finish something for me.
Oooooh 20min! So excited to get started. I've got a number of shorter books I have to read this week for other challenges, so since I've given myself today as a me day and a me reading day I'm going to see if I can knock a couple of them out tonight. All over the 100pages but some are pretty close.

Carmen - How do you want us reporting completed books? Just knocked out my first so want to make sure I'm giving completed to you in the way that works best for you.

I think we should! I like piecing together Spells too so if you want me to track them I don't mind. :)
I'm trying to add them to a spreadsheet that Plethora started so this way we can all claim letters or when we get the challenge really going anything else but for now I'm going to pick one and so we can start. I'm thinking maybe one that we know that may be a bit of a challenge and then an easier one. What does everyone think?Hmm, we're still missing a few members. I need to let the mods know.
Is it possible for all of us to have access to the spreadsheet? Or did you guys want to keep it contained? I certainly don't mind helping save steps by adding my own books to it.

Can I do anything to help? Seriously I'm just sitting home with nothing to do right now and I've certainly done my fair share of spreadsheet work/captain work. Somehow NBRC hasn't ever accepted my offer to captain/co-captain (hehehe - somehow, not really sure how I've managed to escape so far), but I know I've worked with you in other groups. I don't mind being an unofficial helpful aide behind the scenes. ;)

Shelby -I authorized you. I only had it closed to begin with until it was ready. The official spreadsheet for us comes tomorrow. So it will be easier to wait probably and copy over the spells base. That is a lot of words/letters otherwise.
So we can probably hold off on spending a ton of time setting up until later this weekend.

Love being on the west coast. We've got the early reading advantage this time. :) Though I'd much rather be up on your end of the coast than mine. I think someone said once that you were in OR. I miss the Pacific NW.

Pretty much yeah. Born in OR, grew up in the mountains of WA. And yet stuck living in LA, CA. (Can I get anymore two letter abbreviations in that :-p) But it's pretty much the only way to try to have a career in the film industry.
My nephew just moved to Seattle, WA so he's join the west coast. That means I won't be seeing him much. :(
Hey guyyyyys 😊 so excited I can finally start reading for this challenge that I don't even know where to start - I was in such a frenzy to finish all my other current reads by the start time so I basically forgot to decide what I'll start with 😂
But that's the fun of it. Anything is fair game. ;)
