Welcome to our final discussion. I hope you have enjoyed reading The Secret Garden, whether it be the first or fiftieth time. Theatre Calgary’s musical production of The Secret Garden still runs for the next 2 weeks until May 19, so be sure to get tickets while you can!

Discuss:
1. If you read/watched The Secret Garden as a child, how has the experience as an adult changed from when you first read/saw it? Do you identify differently with the characters? How have your experiences affected how you see the story now? How does the author write for children but also for adults?

2. There is a lot talk about magic, especially at the end of the novel and mostly by Colin. Discuss magic vs. science. What are the similarities and differences? What classifies something as magic, or being magical? Do you think the magic started in the garden, or with Mary’s life in India, after all she was the only one to survive the cholera in her house.

3. The Secret Garden is revered for being a classic of children literature. What makes a book a classic?
