Elianna Hills Nobody Is Ever Missing by Catherine Lacey may be one of my favorite reads. The story is intriguing as Elyria gets up and leaves her family to go to New Zealand with no explanation. Even more intriguing however, is the author's language. Lacey's use of expended metaphors and analogies and allusions kept me on my toes and reeling me in to love her writing more and more. Elyria's journey is marked throughout the novel as she meets several different kinds of faces, and especially tries to recognize her own face. In a movement of attempted self discovery, Elyria realizes no one can ever be missing as long as they are alive. There are other amazing philosophical ideas through Lacey's language throughout the book that blew my mind, I would strongly recommend this book. It reminded me of The Catcher In The Rye in the way the main characters attempt to outrun their sorrows but eventually get brought back into reality again, but with a new lens. Another similarity is that the plots in these two are somewhat predictable, but the plot is not important, rather the characters realizations along their journeys. This novel, although somewhat depressing, gives readers a heightened sense of the meaning of life. I highly recommend it!!
