Middle East/North African Lit discussion

I am a bit over halfway through this novel, and find it very interesting.

The first half is written from the perspective of an Iraqi translator living in a camp in an oil field in Iraq in the 1950s.

The second half is written from the perspective of a western-educated Iraqi engineer at the same camp. However, he is housed with the British staff.
