Vincent Cartelli | 3 comments A Song of Ice and Fire, “A Game of Thrones,” displays the story of the mythical land of Westeros, where battles of thousands and a fight for the single crown takes place. This book is no fairy tale and no love story, but is a story of betrayal and deceit. Multiple family’s fight for the crown and all contain a different angel of a rise to power and each environment spices up the decisions they make, and affect the outcome of each character. George R. R. Martin does an amazing job of creating a plot like no other fantasy novel with with plot twists at every turn.
The Lannisters, the Starks, The Baratheons, and numerous more families pick and choose sides to give support and try to fight for the crown. The only catch is, a word of loyalty almost never holds true, constant betrayals and acts of dishonesty, makes it so no man is truly safe, and nobody really has true friends. It is important to always watch your back, even with own family. The Baratheons and the Starks all seem to be okay with the Lannisters, but nobody knows what can happen with the desire for power. The Starks eventually end up in a massive split, one being a king, one being a princess, one being impaired, one being a man of the Nights Watch, and one dead. A divide occurs in the end with multiple Kings and claims for the crown, eventually making vision very askew and leaving nobody safe.
There were very few weaknesses of this book, but the only thing that can be adjusted is the complexity of the book as a whole. Especially it being the first book of the series, it takes a good deal of the book to truly getting to know the characters, what their goals are, where in Westeros or across the narrow sea they are, or what family they belong to. After grasping the main ideas of each character you fall in love with them, making it hard to put the book down and creating more intensity in the plot.
The numerous plots and characters and conflicts all tie in to form one great masterpiece in this book. It creates a set up to carry through for the rest of the series and allows for multiple outcomes to possibly occur with each character. This makes the book very enjoyable and in depth and truly allows you to dive deep into it. The conflict can be scarce at time, but the set up keeps you reading and creates a sense of urgency in the book.
This book was extremely well written and developed. It allowed the reader to be transported into the world of the Seven Kingdoms. The betrayal and deceit that consists in the book allows for a growing passion towards the characters and the conflict. I recommend this book to anyone as it is truly an amazing read.
