Leaves of Grass discussion

Between 1855 and 1892, Whitman revised and republished Leaves of Grass several times. Because of the many changes, we should specify which edition a comment applies to.

Any idea how to tell which edition I have, if it doesn't explicitly say?

The Lifetime Reading Plan recommends the first three (1855, 1856, 1860). And, the preface to the first edition.

The entry for Leaves of Grass in wikipedia would probably describe the differences among the editions.

Interesting sidenote: Whitman (1819-1892) and Melville (1819-1891)were almost exact contemporaries, both spent most of their lives in New York, and both wrote Civil War poetry (Whitman's "Drum-Taps" and Melville's "Battle-Pieces"), but they never met or commented on each other's work.
