Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell is about a girl named Cath who is going through her first year of college. Cath and her twin sister, Wren, are going to the same college. They have been in the same room together since they were little but now her sister doesn’t want to room with her. Cath has to deal with a random stranger as her roommate and has to learn how to make new friends. Cath is a very introverted girl who is obsessed with the book/movie series called Simon Snow. Simon Snow is basically Harry Potter. Cath writes fanfiction about Simon and Baz which are two main characters in the series. In the series they hate each other but many people ship them together in this book. It’s basically Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. Cath’s fanfiction is really popular and gets thousands of hit when she posts new chapters to her fanfic Carry On. Although Cath is very popular online she isn’t that popular in real life. She has really bad anxiety and in the first few weeks of school she didn’t even leave her room to go to the cafeteria because she has really bad social anxiety. The only time she would leave her room was to go to class. Cath’s sister is totally the opposite of her and would party all the time and really liked her roomate. Cath’s roommate could not be anymore different then her too. Her roommate is a year older than her and she parties as well. Her name is Reagan and she has a friend named Levi that is always in their dorm room. He is very friendly and likes too talk to everyone he can. Cath thinks Levi is Reagan’s boyfriend and she didn’t like him that much in the beginning. Cath has to deal with college parties and a drunk sister and roommate. The fanfic Cath writes relates to her life in some ways and other ways not so much. She’s written so many romantic scenes but barely experienced anything for herself. College is a shock for her and it makes her get out of her comfort zone, find good friends, and become who she really is. Fanfiction is comfortable for her but writing her own story is what challenges her. She wants to be as good of an author as the creator of Simon Snow but does not believe she can create a world like that on her own. She challenges herself throughout the book to become her own inspiration. Throughout the book Cath has deal with her social anxiety, family problems, a sick dad, and boy troubles. At the end of each chapter is an excerpt from her fanfic or from the actual Simon Snow series. Most of these excerpts relate to the chapter in some way. I really liked how the author did that. This book can kind of get repetitive though with her anxiety since it is so prevalent and at first it is really interesting but after awhile it gets very repetitive. Also the beginning of the book is pretty boring and it is hard to get into the story.
