Maggie | 5 comments Bossy Pants” by Tina Fey is a comedy autobiography that ranges from ranting about wearing clothes, her honeymoon cruise disaster when there was a fire on the ship and they had to evacuate, to her Saturday Night Live career. She also does not hesitate to talk about her political stance which begins to be more discussed as the autobiography progresses. My mom recommended this book to me, she told me it was one of the funniest things she’s ever read, and I agree. Instead of thinking to myself “huh that was funny” I found myself actually laughing. Fey is relatable and her humor hits home, though sometimes she references pop culture from when this book was published, which was 2011, and it goes way over my head. She’s inspirational, outspoken, and very upfront. I love how outspoken she is of being a feminist, especially in this day and age when the topic is very controversial. Of course she did not write it in 2018 but I don't think she would change anything about how she expressed her political views because of how much personality she has which is portrayed perfectly in “Bossy Pants”, her writing can be perfectly matched with her voice, it’s like a script almost. The second half of the book focuses mainly on her career as a writer on Saturday Night Live, she talks a lot about her coworkers and her boss, she puts in some draft scripts that she wrote which are really funny. This half of the book I did not like as much, in the first half it was about her life growing up into college and I thought it was really interesting. But then everything drastically slowed down when she got her job at Saturday Night Live, where she talks a lot about the stress of her job and all the celebrities she has met. It was pretty cool at first but it got stale after a while and the only thing I had to look forward to was the sketches she would occasionally put in. I would recommend “Bossy Pants” for sure. Tina Fey is undoubtedly hilarious and she clearly put a lot of work in this book. It’s a nice and light read, it’s very easy and short, so I’d recommend it if you want to knock something out real quick. And if you want to laugh of course.
