Emily Wrayburn (emilywrayburn) | 149 comments Hi everyone,

Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for Indigenous Australian authors writing YA (of any genre, really) or SFF (for any age group)?

I'm trying to incorporate more Indigenous authors into my reading, but I find a lot of what I come across is more contemporary drama or memoir and that's not so much my thing. I'm sure they must be out there writing what I want to read, I just wish they were easier to find! The list on the AWW doesn't differentiate by genre (fair enough) so I thought I would come and ask.

(I have already read Ambelin Kwaymullina's The Tribe, which I imagine would be one that immediately comes to people's minds).

Rosalie | 4 comments Hi Emily, Clare Coleman's Terra Nullius is brilliant, also have you read any by Anita Heiss? I particularly liked her Barbed Wire and cherry blossoms.
Cheers Rosalie

Fi Belcher | 3 comments Hi Emily, I’ll pull together a better/more specific YA list, but in the meantime you might start with Anita Heiss’ edited collection ‘growing up Aborigjnal’ as a lot of the contributors have amazing bodies of work, in their own right. My other favourite authors are Kim Scott (who I think does quite a lot of YA too), Alexis Wright, Melissa Lucaschenko, Tony Birch, and Ellen Van Neervan.

I recently read (and loved) Catching Teller Crow - a YA novel by Ambelin Kwaymullina and her brother Ezekiel.

I just stumbled across this list too:
