I have to say that I was hesitant about reading this book at first. I get really bummed out about abuse/bullying on kids. I was so glad I did. Even though Auggie went through the terror of being picked on by the older kids, his classmates saved him. Seeing their turn around and how that brought them together was so uplifting. I liked that the story didn't have a perfect ending with Julian becoming his "best friend". It was more realistic knowing that Julian stayed Julian and was not able to accept and embrace him (just like his closed minded parents). I did like the nice ending with Julian leaving the school so in my head I knew that Auggie wouldn't have to deal with him anymore. Though just like in life, I am sure there was another "Julian" to take that one's place.
I too was concerned that I might be disenchanted by this book since hearing about bullying in our world bums me out. But, as this story went on I was amazed with how not only the story of Auggie, but also of those around him brought it all into perspective. Seeing everyone change and grow through character development was great! Also, it was interesting to see how others who did not have the challenges that Auggie had have their own challenges to overcome as well; we all are dealing with some sort of difficulty in life - physical, emotional, social, etc. - and this book is a great guide book for dealing with that.
The only slight issue I may have had was (view spoiler)
I agree with Vicki's comments about Julian - I am kind of glad he and his parents did not come full circle. It felt more real that way.
