Because why not? Our book for July was Ex-Heroes by Peter Cline. Out of 6 readers who attended the meeting at Wavelength Brewing, no one was blown away by the book or the writing, but several thought it only sucked a little bit. One suggestion was that we should have read the author bio because that revealed Mr. Cline to be a bit pompous and fond of his own writing.

What didn’t we like? There was too much jumping about from when the super powers first began then back to the wait for a massive invasion. We went through that a lot in books recently. Females were simple and simply sex objects. Not interested in the other books in the series.

What did we like? The Celebrity Sightings and points for killing their exes. And that even super powers didn’t guarantee the exes wouldn’t get you. Putting it in Los Angeles at Paramount Studios (The Mount) also helped the story.

Questions: How did the superpowers start to be? Did the book explain this clearly? The first part about the explosion with only one survivor seemed to most to be the explanation but it was never clearly stated.

Was Rodney Casares, aka Mighty Joe Young, aka Cairax too powerful to be believable? And how did he control all the exes like he did? The power level seemed much like Thanos had or something out of Star Wars. And we may never know how he hooked up to all the dead that way. There were no minds to control, really.

Which Superpower would you choose? The ideas ranged across Flying, Moving through Walls, Being able to use anything mechanical just by touching it, and haaving Dr. Strange’s ability to see several possible futures.

We talked about the books we are reading and Joy found one that was free that day. Instantly, all of us were on our phones! Recommended books included Girl in a Box series by Robert J. Crane, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah, The Litany of the Earth by Ruthanna Emrys, who also wrote Winter’s Tide, Uprooted by Naomi Nevik, Touch by Claire North who wrote The First 15 Lives of Harry August, Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me) by Frederic P. Miller and others. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum, Wicked by Gregory Maguire on AudioBook, The Hangman’s Daughter by Oliver Pötzsch, and The Dragon with the Girl Tattoo by Adam Roberts. Also, there are now two more books in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series.

We touched on authors like Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury. We discussed Robot Chicken on YouTube and the very odd and very funny version of The Wizard of Oz. I had all the links in here, but they didn't transfer over. If you want them, email me at my.windrose at cox dot net and I will email it to you.

Our next meeting will be on August 2 at 6:30 somewhere. Nominations are closed and the winner appears to be Territory by Emma Bull. September Theme will be announced soon, a sci-fi category.
