This book has a great cast of quirky characters. Who's your fave?

Mine is Shrike, the most lovable cyborg killing machine in any book I've read. He's terrifying and yet his tale is oddly touching. I love his (view spoiler)[ and Hester's weird broken father-daughter relationship. (hide spoiler)]

There are (view spoiler)[ an awful lot of deaths in this book (hide spoiler)], but the one that really got me in the feels (despite having read the book before so I knew what was coming) is this:

Unexpected memories fluttered through his disintegrating mind, and he suddenly knew who had been before they dragged him onto the Resurrection Slab to make a Stalker of him. He wanted to tell Hester, and he lifted his great iron head towards her, but before he could force the words out his death was upon him, and it was no easier this time than the last.' Yeah. Definitely Dog. For a not-dog he's about as "good dog" as you can get.

Sorry, can't help but like Dog or cute dog videos.

My difficulty with picking a favorite in ME is (view spoiler)[overshadowed by the high death rate for interesting characters. Shrike, Anna Fang, several teens, Dog--all interesting, all dead. Doesn't leave much. (hide spoiler)]

I enjoyed most of the characters in ME equally. I need to read more of the series and get to know them better before I pick a favorite but I did enjoy Tom and Hester's relationship and banter.

I loved Dog, too. I think Katherine was my favorite human character. Anybody else imagine the pirate captain as a steampunk version of Jack Sparrow or was that just me? (view spoiler)[Can I blame George R. R. Martin syndrome for the death of so many likable characters in this book? (hide spoiler)]
