ash

A large square in the center of the city where enslaved (servants) people are bought and sold, market vendors set up their wares, and festivals are held. Here is where the big news will be heard and gossip is easy to come by. Every new moon, a feast is held in this square by the royal family, and all are welcome to attend.

Isabel checked the square from her hiding place between some stalls. She was on her way back to her house from the lake and did not want to be seen. Her dark blue cloak was pulled tight around her as a sudden gust of cold wind became trapped between the houses. Finally, she crept out and tried to swiftly and quietly cross the square. Her blue dress whipped about her ankles and her soft, brown boot made little noise as half ran half walked.

Denver -writes poems drinks wine- | 1075 comments Colettes carriage rolled through the town square as she peeked out the window. Her curly hair was piled around the top of her head, upon which she wore a small hat pinned to tge curls. Suddenly her carriage jolted to a halt as a girl crossed in its path

Isabel gave a small shriek as the carriage appeared. She tried to stop and back away from the carriage but her boot heel got caught in a crack and she tumbled backwards, falling. She gasped as she barely managed to catch herself. Her palms were scrapped lightly from the force of her fall.

Denver -writes poems drinks wine- | 1075 comments "What the bloody hell is going on out there?" Colette said, leaning her head out the door. When she saw the girl on the ground she frowned, but thankfully she couldn't scent any blood. "Are you alright? If you'd kindly move so we may continue on our way that would be much appreciated" Colette called out in her soothing voice.

Seeing a woman with such a fine hair-do and a hat she knew was expensive, Isabel rushed to her feet. "My lady, I am sorry. I did not see your carriage coming." Isabel wiped her hands on her cloak, getting the small stones that had imbedded themselves in her hands out.

Denver -writes poems drinks wine- | 1075 comments Colette brushed her words off with a flick of her gloved hand. "Just be more careful next time. You're lucky my horses are so well trained, anything less and you would have been trampled." Her voice was like a cool drink in the midst of the desert and the way she spoke made it seem as if she were friends with everyone. "What's your name?"

Isabel curtsied slightly and said, "Isabel Goldwell, if it pleases you my lady." She looked at the carriage, admiring it and stole a quick glance up at the lady. She was glad she had encountered this woman, rather than the queen, for she had heard stories of bad things happening to those who crossed them.

Denver -writes poems drinks wine- | 1075 comments "Oh please, call me Miss. Wood" Colette said with a laugh. She hated all the formalities people typically used. "It's a pleasure to meet you Miss. Goldwell, even under such unfortunate circumstances."

"Yes Miss Wood," Isabel said, her head still bowed. "I...I like your hat. My father let me see one like it before he sold it." Isabel blushed. She did not normally say things like that to people she did not know.

Denver -writes poems drinks wine- | 1075 comments "You have good taste" Colette smiled, "And thank you for the compliment. What does your father do?" she inquired, "And where were you off to in such a hurry? I apologize for an hindrance I've caused"

"My father is a merchant, Miss Wood." Isabel said, tugging at the sleeves of her dress. "I wanted to see the stars over the lake." She cast a furtive glade over her shoulder. "I'm not really supposed to be out here Miss."

Denver -writes poems drinks wine- | 1075 comments Colette watched the girl steadily for a moment." Would you like to work for me, Miss Goldwell? I need a good assistant and you seem like a hard worker" she said with a gentle smile

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

"Really?" Isabel asked. "What would I be doing Miss?" Isabel was excited about this prospect. She would get to leave the house. She wished her twin was here so she could share her excitement with her. "I would have to ask my mother and father first Miss"

Denver -writes poems drinks wine- | 1075 comments Colette smiled, pleased. "Well, I would need assistance in choosing my outfits and such, but primarily I would need you to take notes during my meetings with the Royal Family" she said with a gentle smile, "how is your penmanship? Well, I suppose I really should be asking if youve been taught to read or write"

Isabel beamed. "Of course Miss! My father lets me help with books sometimes. I can also do embroidery." She said proudly, "Father has sold some of my work before."

"Of course Miss Wood!" Isabel said excitedly. She curtsied to her new employer and pulled her hood up. She quickly hurried to her house. Her parents would not be happy but she was glad to be able to do something with her life.
