Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) | 129 comments Dune is a classic work of sci-fi by Frank Herbert and is considered one of the foundational works of modern science fiction alongside Asimov's Irobot and Foundation novels. As you read you may notice how this book has influenced important works of science fiction from Star Wars to Star Trek and you may wish to comment on those influences. Or you may like instead to comment on how the book touched you personally and what you think the point of the book is.

This is our book for August following the nominations for an 'Epic Read'. All comments about the book can go in here! Do you think it can or should be able to be adapted successfully? Or does the presence of other works of sci-fi based upon it impede upon translation?

I plan to start reading the book this week - I must if I intend to watch the movie when it comes to our cinemas!

FYI, the link to the discussion about the adaptations is here:

I finally finished the book. The narrative was very impressive, all was so larger than life, every character and even the planet itself. However, the characters felt cold. Maybe I am too old for this, but Paul's superhero status didn't impress me either. The ending was too easy and too abrupt. Paul's personal tragedy should have been more prominent, at least I think so, not only mentioned in a tiny paragraph that can be easily skipped. I wonder what his also author son thought of that at the time. I think I won't read the sequels.

I am still interested in the movie, it should definitely be epic.
