Barbara | 4 comments Hi. First the book is NOT Ring of Bright Water. I picked up this book from my school library when I was in the 5th grade so approx. 91-92 in the nature section, but it was not a new book. I believe it is set in the early 1900s. It was I believe the true story of a man who gets an exotic otter from over-seas (possibly Africa or Asia) He may or may not have travelled himself. They end up in a cabin in the wilderness, once again I cannot remember if it was the US or Canada (I'm leaning towards Canada) He then recounts the adventures he has with living with an otter as a pet. He talks about otter-proofing his house and how they plug his tub while he is out one day to create a slip and slide in his house. I think I also think I remember him taking it/them swimming in rivers. I do not really remember much more, I wish I did. Thank you for any help!

Would Seton have anything?

MB (What she read) | 136 comments Building off of Bookel's suggestion, try this link: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/1088/1... Chapter 25 is titled "The Otter Slide". Is that it?

Kathy | 56 comments My favorite animal book at that age was Dorothy Wisbecki's The True Story of Okee the Otter. Like your author, the Wisbeckis had to otter-proof their (California?) house and at one point installed a tall backyard pool so that their housemate could play and they could have their bathtub and toilet back.

Barbara | 4 comments Thank you for helping, but so far nothing looks right. Seton looked promising, but I checked every book and none were it. I don't believe it was Okee either. I am pretty sure I remember it was a man and he lived alone, but I am going to look into it more to be sure.

Barbara, just curious, could it be another type of animal similar to an otter?

message 7: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4 comments Definitely an otter. I was obsessed and read tons of books about them at the time including Ring of Bright Water which I still have a copy of.

Barbara, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

message 9: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4 comments I never did find it and kind of gave up looking. Maybe someday I'll stumble upon it :)

Barbara, do you want us to move this to a file that says you are not looking for this book anymore?
Or you could leave it in this folder and hope that someone will think of the book. If you do that, you can bump this thread to the top of the list every month or so to keep it freshly in people's minds. You "bump" a thread by typing something -- really anything (like the word "bump") -- in the comment box.

Was the man named Bao, and he rescued the otter from a trap? That's a DVD but I wonder if there is a book associated with it.

Irene Tait (angryirene) | 9 comments Barbara - you mentioned the book was a memoir type, was it non-fiction or fiction?

I found this list of books, both fiction or nonfiction, that someone has compiled on otters - perhaps your missing book is there?

Here is the link - http://www.otterjoy.com/otterbookrevi... - hope this helps!

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments I very much doubt this is your book as it's about a young girl and her auntie rather than a single man, but if you like the genre in general and haven't read it, you might enjoy Seal Morning by Rowena Farre - a memoir about living in a Scottish croft with a range of animals, including the otters Hansel and Gretel.

Also, you mentioned your book is definitely not Ring of Bright Water. Have you eliminated Gavin Maxwell's other books? As well as the Bright Water trilogy there are some others gems there.

Doesn't seem to be An Otter's Story of 1953 which is about an otter's life story and adventures with his otter family.
