The empathy that Manon exhibited in the previous book seems to have vanished and even her Thirteen struggle with her decisions. Why did she behave in this way and what did you think of the affect of Asterin's past on her choices for the future?

Manon is extremely devoted to her grandmother, as well as extremely afraid of her. She continued to follow orders to stay alive. You could tell she didn't like it. Asterin's past was shocking, but it explained a lot and I think it will play a big part in how Manon acts from here on out.

Yes, Manon was definitely torn between her loyalty and fear with regard to her grandmother and her own instincts and the expectations of her Thirteen.

Asterin's revelations were a turning point as she realized her grandmother does not have the witches' best interests at heart.
