Maxwell still could not believe that she did it. She had left her life in California to join a top secret government organization. Never in a million years did she think that she would be standing in a Military base in the middle of the Montana forest. But yet, here she was, 20 years old and head of the Physical therapy department. A giddy grin covered her pretty face as she looked around the space. For a secret military base, this place was so beautiful and well put together that she could almost forget about the whole military thing. As she walked around the vast space, the only sound she heard was the light tapping noise from the heeled booties she wore. She had been told that there were many other employees working there so she was a little surprised there wasn't anyone else in the room. The one thing that had sold her on the job was the new start. Everywhere she went she was labeled as the girl with the murdered sister. She could only hope that the people at the base didn't know about the accident. She just hoped to god or whoever was listening that she could meet some new people here.
When she had first moved to California, it had been great. No one at the University had known about Grey's murder and everyone treated her normally. But all it took was one person to ask her if she had any relation to the girl that was supposedly murdered, but the body was never found. Everyone knew that there was no way that Grey had survived the attack. There was just too much blood for one to of lived. While her thoughts where on her sister Grey, Maxwell had absent mindedly been rubbing the G that was tattooed on the outside of her wrist. It was a habit she had received after getting the tattoo.
There was something very rewarding, Matthew thought, in successfully completing a procedure in the operating room. Of course, it was kind of his job to do that - and what he'd spent years working for. Learning things so that he wouldn't make a mistake. And it was worth it, really - maybe not right away, but eventually. When the patient would realize how close they were to needing to get a leg amputated. When they realized they wouldn't have made it without surgery.
And maybe they would never think about the doctor behind the surgery, but Matthew was okay with that. It wasn't like he went unappreciated. He had respect from his coworkers, and he didn't need people hero-worshipping him, nor did he want it. However, even after a job well done, he wanted to do absolutely nothing. Which was why he headed for the living room - he just needed some downtime.
It wasn't surprising to see someone, but the girl in the room wasn't one Matthew had ever seen before. Judging by the expression on her face, she was new. Or just super excited about her job. Matthew wasn't sure. Clearing his throat to catch her attention, he extended a hand to shake. "I don't think we've met. Dr. Matthew Robinson."
Hearing a deep voice come from behind her, Maxwell jumped and made a childish squeaking noise. Of course she had too completely embarrass herself in front of the first person that she met at the base. In a less shocked manner, Maxwell turned to face the owner of the deep voice. Her cheeks had grown a little red from the initial embarrassment and she could feel the blood rushing in her ears. Good Job Maxwell, you're off to a fantastic start. You idiot She thought to herself. After she turned she found a good-looking man standing behind her with his hand out. Maxwell looked at the hand then all the way up to his eyes. He was older than her but probably not too much and he a sophisticated way about him that made him seem slightly intimidating. After blatantly starring at him for longer than probably necessary, she realized his hand was still out and he was waiting for a response. "Oh yeah sorry." Maxwell said sheepishly, her blush returning, "I'm Maxwell Raider, new Physical Therapist here. " She told him as she shook his offered hand.
New? That explained a lot. She was young, too - which Matthew was impressed by, because if you were that young and recruited for the Alpha Unit? You had to be damn good at whatever it was you did. And apparently for Maxwell, this was physical therapy. He smiled. "Nice to meet you, Maxwell." After pausing, he added, "That's an interesting name. Not in the bad way," he added after a moment, because please - she was probably way used to people commenting on her name.
"What do you think of the facilities so far?" he asked. "On my first day, I couldn't believe how nice the medical wing was - but then again, this is government work, so it's not really surprising that they have top-quality equipment." The last part, really, was mainly him thinking out loud.
Maxwell practically let out a sigh of relief that he didn't make a comment about her gawking. Normal people would of made some irritating comment like Why don't you take a picture? It'll last longer or her personal favorite Ooh, liken' what you see?. Sadly for Maxwell, those comments had been said to her more times than she'd care to remember. Along with her Tattoo habit, Max also struggled with watching people too closely, especially when she first meets them. She honestly is just trying to measure them up and see what kind of personality they have. But she can see how people might get annoyed. "Nice to meet you too." Max told him politely, "You're the first person I met here, so that's cool." She rambled. "I was told there were over 100 employees working here so I was a little shocked there wasn't more people in this room." She continued. Yes, Maxwell Demi Raider was a dork when first meeting people. It was probably due to people treating her weird because of the Grey Accident so she always felt a bit awkward.
"I haven't even been down to the medical wing yet." Maxwell told Matthew when he talked about the medical felicities and equipment. "You walked in just seconds after I did." She explained, "But yes this place is great, well at least the portions of what I've seen." she waved her arm around at the living room. "Have you worked here long? Is it True?" She asked him hesitantly, it was obvious what she was asking about the wolf-shifting marines and the other paranormals here.
Matthew smiled, hoping to put the poor girl at ease. She was freaked out - not that he blamed her; most people were during their first weeks at the Alpha Unit facilities. It was a bit of a... shock, to say the least. He nodded in agreement. "Yes, there's over a hundred of us. But people are in and out, some have shifts. Some" - he gestured to himself - "work on call. Some are night shifts, so you're not likely to see them in the middle of the day." He shrugged. "You get used to it."
"You haven't?" Matthew asked. "Oh. Well maybe - if you want - I could show you around it later. They're really quite impressive," he added. Which they were. The operating room was his favorite, but... he was a bit biased.
He sighed, running his fingers through his hair before answering her question. "Yes. It's true." He paused. "I know it seems - crazy, and I don't really understand it. But... there are some crazy, strange creatures in this world. Ones that the public can't know about."
"Holy shit." Maxwell murmured after Matthew confirmed what she had already been told. Okay, so yes, the directors who hired her had told her all about how supernaturals have lived with the humans for years undetected. Maxwell, who was always been skeptical till she saw something with her own eyes wasn't quite sure what to think when told the information. "I keep expecting someone with long pointing teeth to jump around a corner and go 'Boo!'" Max joked in hope of easier some of her uneasiness. "But yes, I wouldn't love to be shown around." Maxwell said, answering his earlier question. "I ordered a bunch of furniture before I arrived, so I hope it is all in my room." She thought aloud.
