Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 32 comments Survival gill nets, people. Cool bit of gear I was heretofore not very familiar with. (probably because they're illegal in any but a survival situation). Simple in design, effective in use, lightweight in mass, flexible in operation.

Anyway, only $24.99 at your local wilderness suttler!

Lee Pischke | 4 comments I helped my neighbour commercial ice fish on lake Manitoba for a couple of winters. And I can tell you from experience that a net is far more effective in catching fish than a hook and line!

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) | 32 comments I believe you. If I was a fishermen I'd sure use a net. I'm too clumsy to tie a knot on the end of a practically-invisible fishing line.

And spear fishing with a Bowie knife lashed to the end of a sapling branch? No way

Say, what about these new 'spring loaded' hooks? 'Speed hooks', and the like?

Another way to ice fish is to bring a can of tinned peas along with you --open the can and place the peas around the rim of the hole. So that, when a fish comes up to take a pea, you grab him.
