Discuss the Divergent trilogy (and companion book) here.

Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth Four A Divergent Story Collection (Divergent, #0.1 - 0.4) by Veronica Roth

Jessica The first book was okay but then when I got to the 2nd one, it was boring.

I liked all three. The first two were definitely the best, and I wasn't really shocked about Allegiant because of the additional narration. It still made me mad, but I respect Roth ten times more for the ending now.

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 318 comments I'm one of the (I think) rare ones that loved all 3 nearly equal. The Allegiant ending makes me want to read whatever Veronica Roth comes up with next.

Nahh. I like them all about the same. I just haven't gotten around to switching my rating for Allegiant yet. I was more focused on being sad.

I really adored the first two books. I had heard from a number of people that the first book was the only one that was decent and that the second and third were very repetitive. However, Insurgent was my favorite book of the three. Like most people having heard of the Divergent series, I was spoiled on the ending of Allegiant. I went on and read it anyway, though, and I'm glad I did. Aside from the fact that it didn't end the way any of us would've wanted it to, it was a well-written book. By the epilogue of Allegiant, I was satisfied. The Divergent series really is captivating--possibly my favorite dystopian YA series yet!

Sophie | 139 comments I'm currently re-reading this series with my mum. We're onto Insurgent. She hasn't ever read Allegiant but I have - it will be interesting to watch her reaction as, like many, I was already spoiled for the ending. I loved Divergent and I'm loving Insurgent.

I don't hate Tris or find her particularly annoying, I actually found Tobias annoying this time around.

I hate that so many people spoiled the ending for this trilogy. It's so unfair. I started reading them right before Allegiant came out, and I think I finally finished them like two or three weeks after Allegiant was released. I enjoyed all of them.

I think Tris is an amazing character just for the ending of the series. And after reading all of the Four stories, Tobias is pretty awesome too.

At first, I was really upset about the ending, but I do think that Roth opened a window for new things when using The Hero's Journey.

I think I need to re-read them.

Sophie | 139 comments It is unfair. Such a shame. When I first finished Allegiant I was not happy. It didn't help that, that same day, I read a ton of reviews with people stating everything that was wrong with the last book.

The more time that passes and the more I re-read Divergent and Insurgent (also finding out Roth planned it from the beginning) just makes me understand it more and more and, in a way, respect the series even more.

On the other hand...nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

Carmen (BookishCarmen) | 1 comments I'm currently reading Allegiant (I have read it for a loooong time now) and I know what happens, but so far I really enjoy it.

I'm glad you're enjoying it.

I was reading it on a day that I was subbing at my old high school, and my favorite teacher walked by and just smiled because I guess he knew what happened. I figured it out pretty early because of the change in narration, but I still feel so bad for people who were spoiled. I think it has to be one of the most spoiled books of all time.

Nicola Dorrington (nsdorrington) | 42 comments I really enjoyed the first book, but the other two just didn't hold up for me.

I had no problem with the idea of the ending of Allegiant (as an author I completely respect her choice and believe it can be a very valid way to end, even if it makes the readers sad) but I didn't think it was well executed.

The third book felt like I was reading a completely different series by a different (and sadly not as good) author. Everything she'd built in the first two books fell apart. And I can't even start on how badly Tobias was written. If you are going to do different POV's you have to have better distinction between their voices.

Obviously just my personal opinion, but I was disappointed because the first book was so very good.

No. A lot of people agree with you.

I agree with the POVs in the third book. It took away from everything, and I was constantly flipping back and forth to see whose chapter I was reading. The Tris stuff was good, and I thought went well with the rest of the series, but Tobias' parts weren't great. But... the Four stories are really good, so it kind of makes up for it.

Nicola Dorrington (nsdorrington) | 42 comments I haven't read the Four stories yet - I think I was put off by the fact that I really just didn't like him in the 3rd book.

I always just feel it's such a shame when a series that starts so amazingly just doesn't quite live up to it at the end. I seem to find that a lot though :(

I think her problem with it was that she originally wanted to tell the whole series from Four's POV, but it fell flat so she came up with Tris. You can kind of tell in the first Four story how she wanted to take his story, and I really enjoyed reading and getting to know more about him - he's a very complicated and faceted character.

I think with her being so young, it makes sense (at least to me) that there wasn't a lot of distinction between the two voices in Allegiant. I know I had trouble with that when I used to write. It drove me nuts, though. It's the only third book I've ever had problems with in a trilogy, but I still enjoyed how she ended it. I think it took a lot of guts.
