A place to talk about your thoughts on Fangirl.

Sabrina (forebodinq) | 23 comments I really enjoyed it but Cath made me uncomfortable sometimes because she reminded me a lot of myself - for example, I could see myself living off of protein bars because I didn't want to go to the dining room.

OMG. I was totally Cath in school during my sophomore year and most of my junior year. I just didn't want to interact with people.

I only gave the book three stars because something about it bothered me. I'll have to re-read it to see if I still feel the same way.

message 4: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) I really, really, really didn't like this book. I gave it two stars because I hated it at page 50 and therefore didn't really gave it a fair chance.
I get that Cath had a lot going on, but she was waaaaaaay too whiny for me. And her roommate, she was just...not relatable. :D

It's not my favorite Rainbow book at all. There were definitely some issues with it that bothered me.

It seems to me that either you're loving this one and disliking Eleanor & Park or the other way around :)

I started this book in late June, I only read chapters 1-3 or 5. I haven't picked it back up yet. It is a beautiful book and I liked what I've read so far, but I don't really read contemporary novels, so it's a little difficut for me to stay interested in this book.

You actually might like it with all the Simon Snow stuff. It has a mix of fantasy, but it's still contemporary.

But from what I've seen, Rainbow is working on Simon Snow, so the characters in here are going to make more appearances.

message 9: by Irene (new)

Irene (raenne) To me, Simon Snow was just another name for Harry Potter. It annoyed me so much

It was originally HP fanfiction, but I like how she made it her own. There was some new stuff. I'm sure her Simon Snow stuff will be cool.

I didn't find anything of "her own," and that only made me dislike it more :P All the lines and references. Too much.. Imo :)

Well, everyone has their own opinion.

I have tried to read E&P as well and stopped half-way through. I guess maybe Rowell books aren't for me.

Well you said so that you aren't a contemporary fan, and that's all she has out right now.

We can't all like the same, so yeah, maybe she's just not down your alley, your cup of tea or whatever expression is appropriate :P

True. Although, I'm purchasing her latest book Landline soon. Love the idea.

I have this weird thing with not looking up stuff about books, I just go with a promising cover or an author I already know, so actually I have no clue what it's about lol

I love going into books without any clue what they're about - I just usually hear about them before I read them so it's a very rare occurrence :P

message 18: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina (forebodinq) | 23 comments I think Simon Snow was different enough from Harry Potter to be original.
I think I prefer E&P over Fangirl.

I think it was too. I'm excited that she is doing more with it so we'll be able to see. Plus, it appealed to HP readers. HP is the whole reason I picked it up, and I liked it. But Eleanor & Park was better.

message 20: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I really loved this book. For me the writing was emotionally evocative in a way I found fascinating. I cried quite a few times. She also handled the father's mania in a very compassionate and understanding way.

Cath just felt so small inside, like she was trying to bloom.

Kyla (thekylagirl) | 9 comments I absolutely LOVED Fangirl. I thought it was well-written, and I really related to it. I finished it in like a day.

Awesome. I think my only problem with it was that I was too much like Cath that it irritated me. Other than that, I thought it was cute. It really picked up and got interesting when the girls went home for Thanksgiving break.

Yeah, I can see that, because I related to Cath too (although probably not as much as you do because it didn't annoy me haha). And yeah, when they went home was when I found it difficult to stop reading!

I love their dad. He was just quirky enough but I loved how much Cath and Wren cared for him.

I know, right? He was awesome. I love how he was able to be the 'fun parent', but towards the end when Wren was in the hospital he could step up and be a parent as well.

Mminika | 7 comments Does anyone think Fangirl would be my type of book? I like Young Adult Contemporary romance books and cliches. Books by Sarah Dessen and Morgan Matson. And also the Jamieson Brother series and Teen fiction Wattpad books.

I think most people who like contemporary end up liking Fangirl. While I don't think it's Rainbow Rowell's greatest book, I think it's pretty good.

Plus she conquers social anxiety in the book, and I'm always all for books that tackle mental health.

Right? I liked it, but didn't love it. I feel like re-reading it now would probably bump it up for me because I no longer feel like Cath.
