It was exciting and action packed but at the time I wasn't sure why it was happening. I don't think it explained that part of it.
I first believed it was present day so when it transitioned, I was caught off guard. But, it was so helpful in understanding what drives Hunter and what tortured him.
I was caught by what the relationship to the whole story was too. But after reading on it all became clear. It did set up why Hunter has the need to keep it strictly professional and the keep his distance emotionally.
As I progressed through the story, I understood more of why Hunter was the way he was. And not much time passed between Scottie being killed and the story with Hunter and Khalia.
I think it set up the book very well. I think it did a good job of outlining Hunter's character. Sometimes I'm often wondering what makes an Alpha-male tick and I never wondered with Hunter. I was surprised he went right back into action so close to Scottie's funeral though.
