Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 418 comments Book 2/6 for Listopia Challenge
Best Adult Female Friendship Books

Very charming and eccentric story of friendship, devotion and small town life, bouncing back and forth between 1930s Alabama (Ruth and Idgie) and 1980s Alabama (Ninny and Evelyn). Although this book has it's share of loss and unpalatable topics, it is a fine balance of hilarity, unconventional friendships, social injustice and what really is important in life.

In a 1980s (present day, when it was written) nursing home, Ninny tells Evelyn the story of Ruth and Idgie, a little each visit. Their story alternates with events in Eveyn's life. Evelyn is feeling old, timid and like her life really is quite over. By sharing the extraordinary story of Ruth and Idgie, Ninny causes Evelyn to start to feel differently about life. Her transformation and increased self-confidence over the story was enjoyable to read about.

I loved Idgie's character, from the moment when she first met Ruth and was smitten at the dinner table. I really was there to read about her relationship with Ruth, even with all of the crazy characters circling in the background. And the BBQ part will likely stay with me forever...

LibraryCin | 11818 comments I remember liking this when I read it, but I have to admit that I don't really remember it.

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 418 comments I really enjoyed it. There is a movie based on it, but of course it has been changed, and the book is better.

Karin | 9349 comments I first heard of it when the movie came out and for years didn't realize the movie was based on the book. I have never seen the movie or read the book. Perhaps one day I'll read it, now that I'e read a review and seen 3, 4 and 5 star ratings by pbt people.

Seems as if this fits the friendship tag if you read it this month.
