One Word After Another Book Club discussion

I don't want this book club to become stagnant, so to keep things fresh I will try to post something new or interesting in relation to the book of the month every day or every couple of days. Today I want to play a game I call word salad.

To play Word Salad you take the page you are on and go back a random number of pages then pick a phrase from the middle of the page. The next person will do the same, but try to pick a phrase that goes with the previous one. Let's see what kind of word salad story we can make! I'll start:
