You're
You're
The folder Amos had given me is still lying on my desk. My dad has asked me about it, but I refused to talk about it. But it feels like that folder is calling my name. I want to know. I want to know why Bird did what he did. But I don’t open the folder. I can't, because if I open it I acknowledge Bird's betrayal.
Summer has started, and we’re all working in the family business. Emanuel has come home from Luxembourg, which means I have the chance to practice the one skill we all have. Pickpocketing. Because why pay for your own ice cream when the kids in front of you in line can do it? Plus, we didn’t get allowance. We had to get our own. In our family you learn to work the trade when you learn to walk.
“Have you seen Jules?” Emanuel’s head appeared around the corner.
“No, thanks, I’m not hungry.” I reply monotonously without looking up from my algorithm.
“Vere?”
“I’ll be down in a minute, just finishing up.” I say in the same monotonous voice.
“Guinivere!”
“What?” I finally look up from my code. “Oh, you’re not mom.”
“No, I’m not. Now, have you seen Jules? She told me she that Le Rêve was finished, but I can’t find her.”
“Jules went to Tylar. She’ll be home for dinner, though.”
“Tylar? Since when does she hang out with Tylar?”
“Can’t tell you that, but I can help you with your art problem. She gave me the keys to where she stashed it.”
“Gave you?” Emanuel raises his eyebrow. I stick out my tongue in response.
“Do you want them or not?”

The rest of the week my routine was: wake up, eat breakfast, hack Gibraltar (Because I finally found a loophole in their security system), being forced to eat lunch, back to hacking Gibraltar, being forced to eat dinner, failing to getting back to hacking Gibraltar and got to bed. (Because apparently my dad gets angry when I am still up hacking Gibraltar at 3 a.m.… Something about needing sleep, and that coffee wasn’t the correct response.)
But that Sunday I was too curious for my own good, and I opened the folder.
There are newspaper clippings in French, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. There’re also pictures of Bird and his sister Kortney, and copies of Mr Collins’ bank accounts. I decide to call Masha, because I’m our hacker not our language specialist.
“Bonjour, c’est Gwen Reynolds à l’appareil. Je voudrais parler à Masha… … … Allô, Masha? C’est Gwen, ça va? … Oui, ça va. … … Mais, oui. … … Masha, aidez-moi, s’il te plait? … … Non, ce n’est pas un problème avec mon ordinateur. J’ai un problème avec Frederique… … Qua? … Non, Amos a fait. … … Peux-tu venir? … … Super! Salut!”
After my phone call to Masha I head down stairs. To my shock I see Amos at the kitchen table.
“Why are you here?” I ask
“Why hello uncle Amos, what a lovely surprise! Hello Gwen, so good to see you, how have you been?” Amos mocks me.
I glare at him, and walk over to the coffee maker to make me a cup of coffee.
“Masha is coming over.” I say.
“Opened the file, did you?” Amos asks.
“Have you read it?”
“No, but… Si tu veux te confier.” Amos switches to French, as easily as I switch to sign language
“Merci.” I smile
Emanuel walks in, and starts conversing with Amos in German. I never learned German, so I tune it out. The doorbell rings, and I open the door. But contrary to my expectations, Masha isn’t standing on the other side.
