I read this book sometime between 2000 - 2004. It was kind of like a book within a book. The female protagonist (might have been a princess) got tired of her story and decided to leave her story world in search of others. The consequence of this was that the author of her story was unable to continue without her and so her world would disappear unless she found a way back.
