annapi | 5511 comments Miles Naismith Vorkosigan, only child of Lord Aral Vorkosigan and Captain Cordelia Naismith, is an unusual hero. I would almost say he's a bit of a Gary Stu except that he's not tall or handsome. In fact, he has some serious physical deficiencies to overcome, the result of the poison gas attack on his mother when she was pregnant with him. The poison affected his bones, so as a result Miles is short (not quite 5 feet), has a curved spine, has one leg shorter than the other, and his bones are fragile so he needs leg braces to walk. His burning ambition to serve in the military as his father did is shattered when he washes out of the physical portion of his Academy entrance exam, so he takes a trip to Beta Colony to visit his maternal grandmother while figuring out what to do.

From here things happen to him and his wits and ingenuity propel him along until he finds himself unwittingly the leader of a band of mercenaries. It's an outrageous, incredible, unbelievable, and above all, absolutely FUN story and I will be checking out the rest of the series to see what else Miles can do.

Hope | 150 comments Really enjoyed this one too. Everything goes outrageously wrong for Miles and somehow he always uses his wits to pull through. Great to have a disabled hero too!
