This was the first book I read, the one I learnt to read on. It was in the UK, in the mid-80s. I remember there was something about a wizard, and a cat. Possibly climbing a red-brick wall around a garden, with a tree in it? I think it was a whole series, with varying reading levels.

Were any of the books in the series picture books? If there were illustrations, can you describe them?
It sounds like the Puddle Lane series by Sheila K McCullagh. There was also a BBC television series starring Neil Innes as the wizard.

Good luck!

It was indeed Puddle Lane, book 1 Tim Catchamouse. Got it off ebay the other day, and made me ridiculously happy to see it again :D
Wonderful to hear you tracked down the first book you read. Thanks for the update, James.
