This topic is for those who wish to discuss the book in progress. No spoilers please!

Cheryl | 1202 comments I thought it would take at least a week for me to get this book through my library's interlibrary loan, so I put a Hold on it 12 days ago. Wouldn't you know - I got it in 2 days. At first I told myself I'd only read the first chapter, then continue reading it closer to the beginning of October. Big mistake. I devoured this book! I loved it. It's really a supernatural mystery, two genres that are big favorites of mine. So, if you're deciding whether or not to read it, let me just say that I think it's worth trying.

I am super excited for this one!

Kelly | 199 comments starting it tomorrow, and can't wait! even have a print copy since it's not available on Kindle. it's going to make it a little harder to carry my bag to work tomorrow, but I don't think I will mind too much!

Asakawa is a horrible person.

He doesn't treat his wife very well. I didn't like his friendship with Ryuji, either. I think he sees Ryuji as being despicable, but also the best person to figure out the antidote to the video curse. I think he even says that it takes an evil person to figure out an evil curse.

I love (and by love I mean hate) how he's all like, yeah, my buddy is a rapist, but of course I didn't tell anybody. Ugh.

Yes, I agree. I think Asakawa is a bit of a coward, and doesn't want to deal with the consequences of reporting Ryuji for rape. He is also using Ryuji to help get himself out of the video curse, so he is remaining his "friend."

Junichi | 13 comments I started reading kindle in english. I read the original in japanese long ago. And I watched japanese and hollywood movie.

Sarah (sarahmott) | 480 comments I’m having some trouble finding the book! Hopefully I’ll get it soon.

Kelly | 199 comments Bite tongue, bite tongue! Lol! But I agree, Asakawa comes across as horribly self serving. He uses his friends and family, but I see nothing being given in return. Even his daughter seems to get little from him, and VERY little interaction happens between them. But maybe the cultural differences are getting in the way. But, agreed. I didn't like him much.

Kelly,

I, too, wondered if his behavior was seen as fairly common to the Japanese culture of that time. (I hope not. It would've been hard to be a woman there, if this was true.)

I wonder if the translation will feel different for you? (Although it may be so long since you read the book in Japanese you won't notice.)

Junichi | 13 comments I read 10%. I watched japanese movie (Asakawa is woman) 20 years ago, and read japanese book 10 years ago. My memory about this story is mixed movie and book. After I read english book, I will re-read japanese book.

Kelly | 199 comments Wonderful! You will have to let us know how different the translation is from the original. Doumo arigato!

Junichi | 13 comments I progressed 40%, we should be careful about ryuji`s confession about rape. Just only confessin to Asakawa.

But Asakawa believes it and does nothing. That makes him pretty creepy in my mind.

Certainly.

Danielle (daniellebluecat) | 3 comments I thought Asakawa was a pathetic ass, but I like the book a lot. Other characters were much more compelling towards the end.
