What comics/manga have you beed reading lately? What's been good? What's been not so good? Any comics you've fallen madly in love with?

It's only the 2nd, but I think I have some good reading lined up for the month!

Finished
Fuck Off Squad

In Progress
Aquaman: The Atlantis Chronicles Deluxe Edition
My Friend Dahmer

Planned
Watchmen
Bitch Planet, Vol. 2: President Bitch
Revival, Vol. 1: You're Among Friends
The Sandman, Vol. 2: The Doll's House
The Wicked + the Divine, Vol. 7: Mothering Invention

I have way too many books to get through this month to spend a ton of time on comics, but I'm pretty excited about what I have picked out so far!

Wayland Smith | 263 comments This week's comic shop run got me:

Iron Man 4- Stark Enterprises gets infiltrated by robots in disguise, and Tony goes on a date with an old team member
Star Wars 55- the Rebels try and fight their way clear of the ambush
Justice League 9- the team adapts after learning about so many new things, and gets information from their new guest
Nightwing 50- I have no idea what they've done to my favorite hero, but this story might have me jumping off the book.
Green Arrow 45- the shocking events of Heroes In Crisis 1 are confirmed with a funeral for a long time DC hero. Wow, DC is trying to make me quit them this week...
Champions 25- the team goes someplace new as you've never seen them before
Weapon X 24- the group is up against the newest version of Reverend Stryker, and things aren't going well, even with the addition of powerhouse M to the ranks.

All in all, not a great week for DC in my humble opinion as a fan who has been reading them for a few decades.

Daniel | 265 comments Champions Vol. 3: Champion For A Day (Champions - This is the last Volume written by Waid and Drawn by Ramos. Man that's a good team, I really like this book but the Status Quo is definitely shaken up

The Bulletproof Coffin - Read this for our local Comic book Club this month.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank - as part of the IRCB Reading challenge, this was Tia's recommendation. Man this book was good. got me real emotional.

Champions, Volume 4: Northern Lights

Wayland Smith | 263 comments This week's comic book run was pretty cool:

Red Sonja/Tarzan 5- learn the history of the main villain
Titans 27- the aftermath of Nightwing's being shot. I still hate it.
Plastic Man 5- is the Cabal real? Or not? And who does Plas go to for help?
Ms. Marvel 35- the end of the weirdness with Shocker
Hawkman 5- teaming up with an old friend
Domino 7- more action with... vampires?
Avengers 9- one of Marvel's biggest flip floppers goes back to the dark side and a long time Avengers ally dies.
Suicide Squad 47- I'm not sure why there's a special Harley cover for a Capt. Boomerang solo story...

message 7: by Francis (new)

Francis | 134 comments New this week, Catwoman #4, and Domino #7.

I've also been having a Jason Aaron catch up, and read Thanos Rising, and The Unworthy Thor. Aaron has become one of my favourite current writers without me really noticing. His writing style is so accessible, and especially in the case of Thor he has made me really interested in a character which ordinarily I'd avoid reading.

I just weapped 僕のヒーローアカデミア 14 Boku No Hero Academia 14 (MHA Vol 14) last night and... this series continues to get better every volume. I love the direction this story is going because it's not entirely predictable and I honestly respect that.

This series is fantastic.

I also finished Bleach, Vol. 74: The Death and the Strawberry. I had to see this series to the end. Nothing more to say there.

In the comics world, I caught up on Domino (the Domino Annual #1 was particularly really good). I've been seriously digging this book, and I definitely recommend it to for folks who aren't up on X-Men but want a fun X-Men book to read. It's super standalone.

I also (FINALLY) read Iceman #1 and I'm loving it. Sina Grace is amazing and Iceman is great. The end.

And I did get around to reading X-Men Blue #35-36--the end of the O5 story. It was a good ending. Everyone got a goodbye. Now ON TO EXTINCTION! (the series...)

Finally, I got caught up on Black Monday Murders and it continues to be a book I can only read it batches. It's dark and insane. I'm wondering if Hickman is going to end it at 12? It sure feels that way. I'm 100% okay with that. It's a good series that definitely warrants a reread once all of the issues are out.

AGH! I have all of Aaron's Thor comics, but I've only read the first two arcs of Thor: God of Thunder! I need to catch up!

message 10: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith | 263 comments Aaron's Thor is amazing. Actually, I really like everything I've read by him.

This week's comic run:

Justice League 10- the beginning of the Drowned Earth event, combining disaster and zombie movies
Aquaman 41- Drowned Earth continues, and nothing good happens
Mr. & Mrs. X 4- the Starjammers help out our heroes against the Imperial Guard
Nightwing 51- the bastardization of my favorite character continues. I am not a fan of "Ric" Grayson. At all.
Red Sonja 22- what do you do with a peaceful troll?
Thor 6- All Father Thor and Phoenix-verine fight Dr. Iron Fist/Starbrand/ Strange/Doom
Wasp 1- on the plus side, I really like Nadia. On the minus, this cute/cartoon/animae art? Not so much
Xena 9- it's Xena-Con, complete with panels and a stalker. No, really.

Do you keep picking this up in the hopes that it will get better, or do you just prefer to have complete series? I'm curious because I have collected the full mini series of something I didn't like just to finish the story, but those are only ever a few issues.

message 12: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith | 263 comments Nightwing has been my favorite character since the New Teen Titans started. I'm still getting the book to give it a chance, but I'm seriously about to drop both Nightwing and Titans both.

Honestly, they should bring Chuck Dixon back to write Nightwing. His run in the 90's is still the best IMO. And Dan Abnett does not get the Titans at all. I'd like to see what Christopher Priest could do with the series.

Did anyone else pick up Shuri #1 this week? I usually only read trades, but I just had to know how it was! I'm a huge Okorafor fan and have read 5 of her books so far this year, plus who doesn't love Shuri?

The art was more "classic" looking than I was expecting, but the story is interesting and I don't know how I'm going to wait 4+ months for the trade! Would definitely be interested in other people's opinions on it :)

message 15: by Wing Kee (new)

Wing Kee (triptypo) | 33 comments I just finished the first couple is issues of the Percy Nightwing run. It's got potential but it's convoluted and janky towards the end. If Percy had kept it simple he could have done something fun with it like he did with his Ollie run.

message 16: by Wing Kee (new)

Wing Kee (triptypo) | 33 comments Dickson Nightwing is the best.

My Jason Aaron binge continues, I've just read Thor the God of Thunder Vol.1 The God Bucher, which means I'm all over the place in terms of Thor continuity, but I don't think it's harming my understanding of the character. Although I did enjoy this volume, I felt it jumped around the story's timeline a little to much, and even though I don't think stories have to have a linear chronology, there was too much in this particular story for my liking.

message 18: by Phil (new)

Phil | 169 comments I read these two books this week:

Harbinger Wars II - it has some really cool moments and nods that long time fans will enjoy; I feel like this should have been a longer story to make it feel more like the "war" that it is supposed to be.
Mighty Jack and the Goblin King - good sequel; I think I liked this better than the first book.

Started New Super-Man, Vol. 1: Made in China and so far I like it. After that I plan on rereading Revival, Vol. 1: You're Among Friends.

Mike i hate how rushed the End of Bleach felt. It suck because i just love, love this series.
ummm I was disappointed but not because of what happened, just because we did not get more Bleach.

It was definitely fun to get a taste of so many different things this month! I loved the Aquaman Vol. 1 and Revival Vol. 1 the most, I think. I've been meaning to read Gotham Central for years so I'm glad I realized Hoopla had it and got started. I'm in the middle of Vol. 2 right now. Still not sold on Sandman, but trying to get at least halfway through the series before I give up on it.

I read Sabrina because it has SO much hype in the 'regular book' world right now and I honestly have no idea how I feel about it. The art is pretty simplistic, and so is the actual writing, but I feel like it really captures the anxiety of life in America right now. It takes about 2 hours max to read so worth a shot if you're interested. I'll have to check out that volleyball manga, I'm just starting to read a bit more manga lately!
