No worries! Good luck on your midterms. It's impressive that you keep up with your classes AND read books for fun.

It can get hectic but honestly it is a nice break in-between. I like to do audio books for my commutes so that also helps! Reading multiple books is a great thing and also my downfall! lol! I have started though! And I will let you know when I am done!

Hi! I am donnnne and sad to report back that I truly did not like it :(
Honestly, I tried. I really tried. I just cannot get with Roxane Gay's writing. I know I am in the very small percentage of people. I felt the same way with Bad Feminist and figured I would go in deeper and try again to see what the hype is - but just couldn't.
Contradictory on all sorts of levels. And I am not speaking to the subject matter of this book, or the authors character, even though this IS a memoir. I felt for Gay, I truly did. But there is just this thing that I cannot get past, nor behind to support it. I honestly didn't think the writing was that fantastic. I really didn't, and I was shocked by it.
I, like others who aren't fans of the book, just couldn't get behind the idea of Gay being so self loathing towards others and her self, I just don't know. I couldn't. I felt a lot of projection on to others and I cannot support that. It is toxic.

Hi Rachel!!I agree with everything you said....I wanted to DNF the book several times. This was the first book I have ever read by this author. I really wanted to read it bc so many people raved about it. I think she made some interesting points on how weight, body image, etc. is perceived in our society. I thought she could have made her points and ended the book, however it dragged and dragged.....lots of repetition.

yes I totally agree. I am not knocking her story by any means because she is a survivor and victim of rape and that is a sad reality that she and many others live with. At times, she said somethings that were really good, but nothing profound for me. I just couldn't get over how she was writing about how hurt she was by her body and the hurt she felt, but yet was knowing down other women for being skinny, or working on their body in a different way. I just don't like that mentality and it really turned me off.
I read Bad Feminist and felt the same way. I don't think I will pick another book up by her, which is unfortunate because she is so highly rated.

Yes, this is true. I totally sympathize with anyone who is victim of anything. My heart goes out to any survivor. However, I also I didn’t care for the writing structure. At some points in the book, she came across as arrogant (or defensive) ....maybe these words do not describe my exact feeling, however she basically presented an “I don’t care” attitude (persona) in some parts of the book. I listened to the audiobook and she reads it in a monotone voice. This made it worst. Phew!!!!
I look forward to Beartown.

Yes! I listened to it too so I could get her emotion in it and I was like - wait am I missing something?! And I agree! I definitely felt eh arrogant, defensive and passive aggressive attitude from her reading it as well.
I am going to read Beartown as well - excited to do another mini-buddy read!
