Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 1270 comments Hey! Hey! Hey!
Welcome Barrelers,

So glad to be part of another iteration of Wheelathon!
I love this game, it's so much fun! :D

Great to see so many known faces in the team as well. I've had great fun with a lot of you in many other challenges across GoodReads, and I'm ready to add this to that list. :)

Laura | 5524 comments Hello Team! I know a bunch of you from other challenges, and I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of you. :)

Not to get right to the planning or anything, but it looks like COBWEB is our first word. I’ve got a book that has cobweb in the title, so bonus points there!

I've already been making a list with titles that will work for our first word haha I'm all about planning! The book hunt is my favorite part of challenges.

message 18: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments I have a book that works for C, B or W.
Also, to set expectations since some of you may be speed readers, I usually read just 1 book per week. :-)

message 19: by Tammie (new)

Tammie I’ve been known to read a lot, but for this round I committed to 10 books/mo...I’d like to keep it that way if possible.

I like the hunt as well...need to read on the rules again

message 20: by Tammie (last edited Oct 06, 2018 12:21PM) (new)

Tammie Q what’s the difference between these two bonus choices?
- Word in title/series name --> 30 points
- Word on the cover --> 40 points...would this be a picture of a cobweb?

I assume our book has to work for ‘cobweb’ and then if it fits the bonus we get those points as well vs it being either/or?

message 21: by Amanda A (new)

Amanda A | 629 comments Word on the cover is a picture on the cover. I have one with a cobweb on the cover that works for B that I could read.

There is no cobweb shelf, but there is cobwebs. https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... There are not many books to choose from with cobwebs on the first page of shelves. I could get one from Overdrive that works for C or W, if no one else finds one.

I didn't find anything on there. Everything that looked like something I could read didn't have it on the first page.

Vicky (librovert) | 3163 comments Hey, hey, everyone! Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, I'm just getting in from a much-needed vacation. :) I have a lot to catch up on in real life tomorrow, but I'll have some quiet computer time on Monday to start getting things together!

message 24: by Tammie (last edited Oct 07, 2018 03:17AM) (new)

Tammie I found this book...it's been on my tbr forever.
The Forbidden by Jodi Ellen Malpas
It does have a character named 'Colin' in the book.
Glad to read this if it works for everyone.

I wish it was longer...I looked through the list Amanda posted, but didn't really see cobwebs on the covers...unless the 'mist' can be counted as such....hmmm

Kayla (kaylaschwae) | 27 comments Hey everyone! Im finally back from a weekend away with hubby. Im so excited to start!

message 27: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3163 comments I had a few minutes this morning to do a bit of math and get some clarification from the mods about how we get points.

We only get the 15 bonus points for word completion once per word. However, we need to complete a second word to start getting points for a third word and so on. Here's the example the mods gave:

BONES BONES BO --> Gets points for all letters
BONES BON BO --> Only BONES + BON get points

Based on the number of books everyone signed up with, we should read about 34 books per week. That means we should be able to read 5 (maybe 6 if we push it) repeats of COBWEB. But that means 5-6 of C, O, W, E & 10-12 Bs.

I'm going to look through my books tomorrow when I have more time and see what I've got.

Also, the mods are working out the question of how to get genre points for the genres that are very difficult to find. So stay tuned for that!

My COBWEB in title book will work for a C or B.

Thanks this helps...I’m still slightly confused on the bonus points...specifically how to maximize those

message 30: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Hi Team!
Excited for this challenge to start! Wheel-a-thon was so much fun last time!
I'm late checking in as I didn't receive a notification that the thread was up and running. Captains, could you check this out for me and make sure I'm getting them? Thanks a ton! I have a few books to choose for letters, if we're selecting letters now.

message 31: by Cait S (new)

Cait S | 2825 comments Is that how we want to do it? Like have a spreadsheet and plan out letters in advance? I'm totally down with whatever. My library is about a half hour drive for me so the sooner I can know what letters y'all expect me to cover, the easier it is for me.

I'm happy to check out a stack that covers all the letters and just do whatever needs done though. I'm not picky, just want to be as helpful as I can :)

message 32: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3163 comments Tammie wrote: "Thanks this helps...I’m still slightly confused on the bonus points...specifically how to maximize those"

There's not really a way to maximize the bonuses since we can only get one of each per week, so as long as we have them all covered we'll be getting max points. To get all the bonus points each week we need:

1 book with our word in the text
1 book with our word in series/title
1 book with our word on the cover
1 book with our word in the genre
AND
1 full spell-it-out (for the 15 point bonus)

Does that help?

Vicky (librovert) | 3163 comments Nanci wrote: "I'm late checking in as I didn't receive a notification that the thread was up and running."

No worries! I don't think there was anything official that was sent out to notify - they just posted it in the main Wheel-a-Thon thread for people who were following the thread. I only knew they were out because I got the e-mail that they had shared the spreadsheet with me. XD

Vicky (librovert) | 3163 comments Cait S wrote: "Is that how we want to do it? Like have a spreadsheet and plan out letters in advance?"

I always love a good plan! We'll definitely have a tracking spreadsheet (for those of you who haven't played with me before, I have a mild obsession with spreadsheets) that I'll be getting up tomorrow. We can start filling in some things, but I don't want to put too much pressure on everyone to decide right away what they're going to read, especially since we have almost three weeks until go time.

Laura | 5524 comments Vicky? Spreadsheets? I had no idea! :)

message 36: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments Sounds good about the SS, Vicky! Also, now that I commented on the thread, I seem to be getting email notifications when one of you post, so I think my problem is solved.

Laura | 5524 comments Nanci wrote: "Sounds good about the SS, Vicky! Also, now that I commented on the thread, I seem to be getting email notifications when one of you post, so I think my problem is solved."

I wonder if you have your profile set to automatically subscribe to email notifications on any thread you comment on. Otherwise, you can click the "Notify me when people comment" link on the bottom of the page, and select how you receive notifications.

message 38: by Nanci (new)

Nanci | 2567 comments I went to my " account settings" and then went to "email settings". I didn't see the "Notify me when people comment" link. Is it in another place? I have my email for NBRC set to "Digest". Could that be the problem?
Whenever I join a challenge, this seems to be the problem. I don't hear from the people on the thread until I comment on it and I always wonder how others know it's active.
TIA Laura, for helping me problem solve this. :)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments "Notify me when people reply" is at the bottom of the screen on any thread, just below the comment box where you would type a new comment.

message 40: by SandyC (last edited Oct 08, 2018 04:55AM) (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1193 comments OK, dumb question.
If I have a book with author C that also has the word cobweb in the text, can that book be used for both criteria or just one?

message 41: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5524 comments All the bonus books have to be used in a spell out, so both.

message 42: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3163 comments I did a little tracking spreadsheet today, it's nothing fancy but it will at least give us a way to track the letters everything works for. I went ahead and put enough iterations of the word in to get us 36 books for the week.

I filled in a little bit of what we've talked about and put in two of my own books that I can put off until then. I have two other books that work for B and E (possibly more) but I don't want to commit myself to more than two a week until I see how the week goes for me!

message 43: by Kayla (new)

Kayla (kaylaschwae) | 27 comments Do the books have to have cobweb in them? Im having a hard time finding the word on my lists. Lol

message 44: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3163 comments Kayla wrote: "Do the books have to have cobweb in them? Im having a hard time finding the word on my lists. Lol"

Not all of them, no! We just need one each for the bonuses. All the rest of the books just need to be able to be used in a spell-it-out for one of the letters in COBWEB. :)

message 45: by Kayla (new)

Kayla (kaylaschwae) | 27 comments Awesome. Ill for sure read 1 book a week. I have books for every letter so let me know what one you need me to read :)

Nanci | 2567 comments I found a book at my library Cobwebs. Is it ok that it's in the plural form or does it need to be an exact match?
