Michelle (govmarley) | 3150 comments GENRES

For these "word as genres" we have alternatives you can use as follows:

Word: Can also use:
SKELETON > CLOSET
BROOMSTICK > FLYING
TOMBSTONE > GRAVEYARD
POTION > MAGIC
CANDY CORN > TREAT
JACK-O-LANTERN > VEGETABLE
COBWEB > WEB
CAULDRON > WITCH

All other genres, you need to use the word as given

You CAN use plurals
You can NOT use hypenated words (e.g. black-author does not work for black)
Where a word is already hyphenated, you can take out the hyphens (e.g. trick-or-treat you can use trickortreat)

Kate Another first-timer here. Excited to figure out this game!

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 3150 comments Hi Stephanie and Kate! Wheel is a lot of fun. I'm sure this team will do great, too.

message 20: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3440 comments Hi Everyone
Just to let you know I won't be around much for the next couple of days so I'll make this quick.

Welcome to Wheel-A-Thon and Team Scary Teddy. Please post your shelf when you stop by. Michelle and I are your Captains for this round of Wheel-A-Thon, and will guide you through the mayhem. If you have any questions please ask and we will try to resolve them.

For the planners among you:
Our Week 1 word is POTION,
For the spell-out we can use: Title; Author FN or LN; Series; Character
Bonus Word Collect: 1 of each
Word in text
Word in Title/Series
Word on Cover
Word as MPG: First page of tags

Let's have some fun

message 21: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Great to have you and Michelle at the helm Louise!

My shelf link: NBRC-Wheelathon III

For Week 1 I have a book that has

word in title/series OR word on cover - The Motion of the Potion (All My Exes Die from Hexes Book 1) by Killian McRae The Motion of the Potion

message 22: by Michelle (last edited Oct 05, 2018 08:30AM) (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 3150 comments Excited to get started!

For those of you who might not have played Wheel before, the spell-out portion is fairly simple. While you are reading, be sure to check for all of the letters in our word. Characters can't be a one-time mention, but they don't have to be a main character either. Think someone who has some impact to the plot in some way. List every letter you can find when you report into our "books read" thread.

For the bonus word collect, be sure to list those things, too. We can report one of each, so list everything you can and Louise and I will move it around to make it work to our best advantage.

And most importantly, let's have fun, like Louise said! Looking forward to sharing great books with you all during the challenge.

message 23: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i can do Nyota's Tyrannosaur for N [it has to be more than 160 pages right? barely made it lol] and i've probably got more if i look around. i haven't even made my november tbr yet.

i haven't done wheelathon before so a few questions 1. we can spell the word more than once right? and 2. i thought they mentioned something about reading a book with a cover that is mostly the same as the color on the wheel?

oh and my shelf is here [i renamed it since i submitted it on the sign up form so idk if that matters?]

message 24: by Kate (new)

Kate My shelf is here: holiday-wheel.

I haven't gotten very far in planning my upcoming books, but will be happy to focus on a few of the vowels. I have found some very fun mystery writers for both I's and O's in recent months.

I do not have a lot of experience on GoodReads and am looking forward to using this challenge to explore and learn more about this site.

Excited to talk books with everyone!

message 25: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3440 comments Perfect Jenny, that will cover one of our bonuses (prob title & T)

Devann we get bonus points for completing our word each time but can only have one incomplete word at the end of the week. The cover Color relates to the word, in this wheel if our word spun was Black that would be our word and cover Option.

For this 1st week we need potion(s) on the cover eg Ghost of a Potion (A Magic Potion Mystery, #3) by Heather Blake potion bottle

I have two books for week one. I am excited. This is my first challenge like this. Let me know if there is anything specific needed.

message 28: by Kate (new)

Kate Hope everyone is having a nice weekend! Three weeks and counting to getting this party started.

message 29: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 3150 comments Definitely!

Remember, for this challenge you can't start reading until the challenge officially begins. So those of you who are planners, set those great books aside to spell our words and wait until the countdown!

message 30: by Kate (last edited Oct 08, 2018 10:01AM) (new)

Kate Good reminder! Thanks, Michelle. I am a bit of a planner, but find myself very distracted by the shelves at the library. :)

Do we use GoodReads time for the start date? As soon as it is the 27th on site, we can start reading? Or do we use our own time zones?

Never mind, I found the countdown clock. Thanks for including that.

Julie (JuJu) (jlb27) Hello! Another newbie here, but I’m excited to try this out. This is the first challenge I’ve done like this, so I hope I get it figured out!

We add books to our shelf once they’ve been read...after the start date? And the date used is the date the book is finished?

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 33: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (govmarley) | 3150 comments I’m ok with you adding them to the shelf as you are reading them as long as we get the finish date after you are done.

The date used will be the finish date, yes.

Am I correct that these books would count?
The Admirer's Secret The Admirer's Secret (The Mental Madness Suspense Series) by Pamela Crane (for the Author - Pamela Crane)
Dark Road Home Dark Road Home by Angela Bennett (book color Black)

For the bonus word - what is “word in text” and “word as MPG”. Sorry for all the questions 😊

message 35: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3440 comments The Admirer's Secret would work for P and T in Potion

Dark Road Home at first glance doesn't fit our word for week 1.

As our word for week 1 is Potion we need to find the following for extra points:
"Potion" in the text of a book;
"Potion" in the title or series name of a book - Jenny has one for this;
A Potion on the cover of a book - Alexandra has one for this
"Potion" listed as a MPG (Main Page Genre), this is the main Shelves listed when you navigate to the books main page, or the first page of tags.

Still trying to wrap my head around all of this 😊. In Dark Road Home, there is a character named Osmand. Does that count for the letter O?

For the book The Admirers Secret....where did the T come from?

I’m still totally confused by the meaning of Main Page Genre, but I’m hoping I don’t really need to understand it.

(Not sure where I got the book color Black from, I guess the book cover is yellow)

message 37: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments I think poison is on the color yellow on the wheel, does that mean we need a yellow cover book or does color not come into it at all?

message 38: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3440 comments @Julie, yes Osmand would work for O. The T comes from the first letter of the title, we can use or disregard articles to suit our needs.

With regards to Color this doesn't come into It this week, depending on our spins in subsequent weeks we may need it.

Victorian Vickie (vhartwell) I am late to the party...Will there be a list of who is reading what for the spell out? There are so many posts that I am a little lost.

Thanks!!

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 4185 comments Louise/Michelle, do you want us to start putting books on our shelves so you know what we have for this week, or do you just want us to post stuff here for those of us that like to plan what we might be reading in Week 1? Or do you plan to use a spreadsheet for tracking? Whatever is easiest for y'all works for me.

Post here what you can cover, tab 2 of the team spreadsheet is our tracking spreadsheet with planned books.

message 46: by Dev (new)

Dev (lumensuperbis) | 2778 comments i'm for sure doing Nyota's Tyrannosaur for N and i'll be reading that before the 31st hopefully.

also i'm guessing that since this round starts at 4pm my time on the 27th it will continue until 4pm on the 3rd to make it a whole week? just making sure because i usually try to finish everything up at the end of the month and start new stuff on the 1st so the fact that this first week is split is messing with my planning a bit lol

anyway for november i'm also going to reread Deathwish which has a main character named Promise Nottinger so that works for P and T and The Winter Long which has characters named Simon Torquill and October Daye so that also works for T and O and i average about a book a day so i can get those done in time i'm sure.

i'll try to look to see if any of my planned books have potion in the text later today if we still need that.

Hi Louise - we are only accepting plurals. However, potions is one of the genres that we understand there are really no options and we will be posting soon about what options will be allowed 😉

Rounds are working on Lisbon time so will be the same every week, we will get our new word a couple of days before the start of the following week for planning.

I'll add your books to planning when I get home.

We do still need potion in the text so if we can tick that off that would be great.
