The Cuckoo's Calling
question
Imagined casting of lead characters

While reading The Cuckoo's Calling and The Silkworm I have created a mental image of Cormoran as Gerard Butler, and I can only imagine Robin as Emily Blunt (even though her hair color would have to change).
I would love to hear more thoughts and input about this!

I like Rory McCann as Cormoran. He's big enough and hairy enough plus he's a great actor.
Wow Pamela, I had the same thought about Emily Blunt, came here to post that.
I was starting The Silkworm this morning and wondering about casting the movie, too. I think Emily Blunt might be a good Robin, or maybe Emma Stone. But I was thinking Sean Bean would be a good Cormoran Strike. He has a sense of quiet menance that is balanced with a one of honor. Gerard Butler is maybe too handsome. Though I wouldn't complain if they did cast him.
Sean Bean would have been a good fit for this part, but unfortunately I think he's a bit old for it now. When I read these books I always imagined Cormoran as being a bit like a Cornish version of Harry Hole! It should definitely be a big, brooding, but hug-able Brit - Tom Hardy would be great.
I'm not sure about Robin, I didn't always get such a clear mental picture of her - although I loved the character. The suggestion for Karen Gillan sounds good to me - she's naturally beautiful without looking too "Hollywood" and could convey Robin's strong personality easily. Or (if she didn't mind the continued association) Emma Watson would be great too!

Tom Burke has been officially cast as Cormoran. I saw his work in War & Peace and I think he could be a very good fit for the role of Cormoran.

Both of those(Sean Bean and Emily Blunt) are excellent picks! I adore Emily Blunt and hadn't even thought of her, but she'd be perfect! I was picturing Kristina Hendricks as Robin for some reason, but I don't think she's the best match. I think she has too much va-va voom to play Robin... I also picture Robin as a red-head, even though the book states her hair is blonde. Not sure why I see her with red hair.
I always imagine Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep's daughter) as Robin.
I would like to see Bonnie Wright as Robin. She has the air of quiet determination the role requires.
When I read the Cormoran Strike books, I imagine Richard Armitage as Cormoran even though he's too old. And I think Georgia Moffett would be a good Robin
Through the whole book I kept thinking of Brendand Gleeson (aka Mad Eye Moody) or Ray Winstone. They're both way too old but maybe they can use Winstone's animated body from Beowulf.
Never had a favorite for Robin but I like the suggestion of Rose Byrne.
Never had a favorite for Robin but I like the suggestion of Rose Byrne.
I think Emily Blunt is too old to play Robin - she is supposed to be around 26 if I remember correctly - plus she is discribed as curvy, and for some reason o imagined her as a bit shorter than all these suggestions. I know she's not an actress but I always imagined her looking like Tanya Burr!
I think we have to remember that Cormoran is only 35-36 in the books and less conventionally good looking, though that will be completely ignored by the TV people, ugliness doesn't sell TV shows, so expect someone cute, but you could do a lot worse than Jonny Lee Miller and I would cast Jenna Coleman as Robin, she can act, whereas dear old Karen Gillan has but the 2 facial expressions, pouty grimace or pouty smoulder.
I'm wondering how 'Hollywood' the cast will be. Most of the actors mentioned are too old and too Hollywood. And it would be gutting if an American actor played Strike! It needs to be someone British, gritty and under 40. Tom Cullen would be good, he could be roughed up a bit more. Imogen Poots would make a fantastic Robin.
Karen Gillan would be perfect. Brendan Gleeson would have been a perfect Cormoran 20 years ago. Russell Crowe is about 10-15 years older than Strike but that could be close enough with the right makeup and cinematic tricks.
A lot of people are suggestion actors that either don't fit the description of the characters or don't fit the correct ages.
My vote goes to Chris O'Dowd as Cormoran and Karen Gillan as Robin = Perfection!

I think Michael Fassbender would make an interesting Strike if he gained a bit of weight for the role. Joanna Vanderham would be good as Robin.
I'm reading this now and the first actor that I imagined to be Cormoran was Liev Schreiber. He just fits the name Cormoran Strike. I pictured the very beautiful Charlotte as Rachel Weisz and Robin as Rachel McAdams. I really hope they cast Liev as Cormoran for the BBC series and I hope the quality is like Sherlock.
Corm isn't a pretty boy, that's for sure. But he seems to clean up nicely enough to be ... alluring? Attention getting. I'm also in the Karen Gillan as Robin camp. My vote for Cormoran is Karl Urban. Rugged, similar age/height. He's played a role before with a soft belly that was adorable. :)
In the spirit of Robert Galbraith, I think none of the usual suspects should be cast. 2 unknowns with no baggage please.
Ever since watching Backstrom, Genevieve Angelson is my Robin. Liev Schreiber is my Cormoran.
Brendan Gleeson would be a great choice for Strike. Jude Law might work but he's possibly too smooth. Tom Hiddleston could fit the bill.
Vinny Jones would be a good choice, suspect Jason Statham is too Hollywood these days.
Christopher Eccleston would be my choice though - check his IMDB page and you see Strike.

For Robin - possibly Sarah Lancashire, I don't know that's a tougher part to call.

Ridiculous as this is (and it is, even I find it so, yet can't help it)....I always picture Seth Rogen as Coromoran Strike.
I can see Philip Glenister as Cormoran strike and Carey Mulligan as Robin.
My perfect casting would be Kevind Durand (LOST, The Strain, Vikings) as Cormoran and Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood, Daredevil) as Robin.
I saw this actor, Mark Stanley, in Kilo Two Bravo. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4440305/?r...
He was great, but what really reminded me of Strike was that the movie was all about British soldiers getting wounded in Afghanistan. Land mines & legs. It was a good movie though.

I agree about Sean Bean! I could see him as Cormoran! I really liked him in Game of Thrones! He's starting a new show soon named Legends I think.
I was thinking Clive Owen for Cormoran Strike. Gerard Butler and Javier Bardem are good suggestions too.
I pictured Strike looking something like Corey Stoll. I think he'd be perfect in that role.
I saw Emily about as Robin too, I also agree Sean Bean would be an excellent Cormoran...I pictured Clive Owen when I was reading it though...Gugu Mbatha Raw or Thandie Newton as Lulu.
My perfect Robin would be Olivia Hallinan, for some odd reason I always pictured her as a redhead.
As for Cormoran, I'm still undecided if I prefer Clive Owen or Idris Elba.

Assuming they're going to film all of the series then they need to pick someone they can count on for the next decade. So an actor who's physically right and not too old for the part. This applies to both Strike and Robin.
Minor roles like Antsis, Lucy, and Charlotte need to get multi-pic contracts for continuity assuming they'll continue to appear. I'm not sure Lucy will be written in since Cormoran's visits to her do little to advance the stories.

I too imagined Robin as Emily Blunt. However, the whole time I was reading the novel I pictured Cormoran to be Robbie Coltrane as he looked when he played 'Cracker'.

While reading, I pictured actor Donal Logue as Cormoran Strike although he's not english or 35.
All of these actors are too old. Cormoran is 36 years old. Very young. And he's big as a bear, like Khal Drogo big, and has 'pube hair', and is a bit overweight, and is not handsome. In the Cuckoo's Calling that model describes him as 'butch'. Clive Owen would have been perfect, if he was 20 years younger, had dark eyes, and wasn't so good looking. But Karen Gillan or Emily Blunt as Robin are both perfect choices.
Lena Borch
I picture Tim Roth when reading the books - but probably too old...sigh...But then I DO have a hard time picturing Strike as not a 40-something ;O

I just have a comment...why does every book written HAVE to be a movie? I understand that actors and actresses will not have jobs if there is no plot for them or book for them to act on, but jeez! There should be big awards shows(like they do for Oscars, Grammys, Tonys, etc) for book writers--I know they give out awards for them, but it should be big broadcasts on TV. I am just saying!!
Emily Blunt *would* make a perfect Robin and if Tom Hardy were taller, he would be the most badass Cormoran. Gerard Butler would be too, but isn't be too old?
If they can make Tom Hardy look huge as Bane, they can, through the magic of special effects and camera angling, also make him look big as a bear like Cormoran. Now that casting would be super awesome!!!
Starting Career of Evil now, and I'm loving it...

I've always pictured Strike as a younger, taller version of Daniel Craig. He doesn't have the right hair, but he gives me the right feeling of bulk, muscle and menace.
Jason Momoa, Kal Drogo, and Jared Padalecki, Sam Winchester, are both the right age, height and size. They can learn a British accent.
Tom Hardy as Cormoran, Karen Gillan or Eleanor Tomlinson as Robin, David Leon as Matthew.
Dylan Moran as Cormoran, Gemma Arterton as Robin.
