I've made a goodreads list if you would like to track your progress, available here: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1....

Sam I just joined the group primarily to dicuss the translated books on thus year's list. I think the translated litrature list was my favorite of this year's award lists so far. I've read 5 and intend to read the read the rest as they bcome available at my library. The shortlist is wonderful but this longlis has a lot of depth. I hope there is continued discussion on these books.

Me, too! I think I found the Translated list more enjoyable so far than the Fiction list. Same went for the Booker Prize this year--loved the Booker International more than the Booker Fiction

Beverly Me also :)

It turns out that I had most of the books on the long list on my shelf - it seems like i needed a little push like the NBA.

Karin (8littlepaws) All the comments in here are making me think I should tackle this longlist over the course of next year as well!

Soon all of my reading will be driven by awards lists....

message 7: by Sam (new)

Sam I am awaiting the remainder of the longlist to become available from libraries. I'll be reading Wait, Blink and The Beekeeper. Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough to get a hold on the Emissary and probably won't get to it till next year. Likewise, Filghts is not available to me at my local library and I have to wait a little longer for an associate library edition. The NBA translated longlist was my favorite of the longlists so far this year and to emphasize the depth of the list, Comemadre which I only gave 2 stars made Publisher Weekly's top 20 of the year list.

Interesting list. Thank you for sharing! This put some new stuff on my radar. Some translated books on here as well. I am curious if anyone has read the new Kingsolver, Unsheltered?

I have not, woefully, read anything since The Bean Trees and really need to catch up on her works. I liked the variety of the PW list and have read 10, enjoying most. The ten I didn't read are just as qppealing from the descriptions. It was a great year for literay fiction with so many good books!

I completely agree about 2018 fiction.

I just picked it up from the library. I'll let you know what I think.

I just finished it. I tried to link to my review and just realized I don't know how to do that, but I really enjoyed it. I feel it's gotten a lot of undeserved criticism, but I liked both the contemporary and the historical sections, and if it was perhaps too preachy for some, it was certainly speaking my language so I didn't mind that at all.

Ugh, I just bought two books from this list and put two on hold...They just look so different and interesting! But I have an approximately 4 trillion book TBR list (no lie, I have hundreds of unread books on my Kindle, because...BookBub and bad impulse control. I honestly have no idea what's on there, there have been several times I've gone to buy a book and Amazon tells me I already own it.)

And soon the TOB longlist is coming out. AND I'm a slow reader...I've decided these lists are not good for me.

I think this is the second or third time I've seen Melmoth mentioned, so that's next up for me. Seems like it'll be fascinating...

I think I might pick it up through Book of the Month this month. I was on the fence btw that book, the new John Boyne, or just skipping the month and waiting. I have too many books as it is.

Been there and done that! But suddently, out of nowhere, the spell snapped for me and I unsubscribed from BookBub and the like. I much prefer reading in print and I don't travel enough to justify having so many ebooks. I feel like I was temporarily brainwashed. I think what saved me was discovering that I was checking books out of the library that were already on my Kindle. I have a GR shelf called "on my Kindle", but apparently I don't consult it much.

Same here. I still have.....an embarassing amount of unread kindle books. Hundreds. BUT I do travel fairly regularly, and I make it a goal now to read as much as I can from the books I own already. Lately when I have that "acquire more books" itch I just go to the library and go to town!

It is a good think that my kindle books are not print or else I would not have a bit of space in my apartment!

I tend to read print books and my lucky my library system usually has the books I would like to read.

I do usually have a print book, audiobook, and an ebk going at the same time.
