Trike If they hit the complexities of that society that we saw in Rebels, this could be interesting.

Ooh, I’d totally be a bounty hunter for the Empire, to go with your other thread.

Yeah, after the whole Alderaan thing, I suppose I would have gone bounty hunter, too.

Nathanael (nathanaels) | 14 comments Taika Waititi being one of the directors for the show would have sold me on it, even if I weren't already interested in the sort of Western in space vibe it sounds like they're going for. Really curious about who they got for the main character since they're apparently already filming and haven't announced yet.

In the episode with Bo Katan the Storm Troopers were ringing his armor like they were playing bells.

You talking about the most recent episode?

message 13: by Dj (new)

Dj | 2364 comments Yeppers. It had some pretty amazing fight scenes.
I think it is six for the season.

message 14: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 271 comments I am really liking the show - not really sure why? Maybe it is nostalgia - not that the acting is bad. And the reference to attachments being bad - I got it - but in the new rebel alliance - the force users get married and have attachments. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I have to agree with that assessment. The new movies (except for Rogue One) have been, well, let's go with "disappointing". The few new books I've read weren't what I'd hoped for either. Not bad, but not enough to bring me back for more. Haven't read been inspired to read any of the new comics. I haven't even been into the animated series for a while. Burned out on the whole thing I guess.

The Mandalorian is everything I love about Star Wars. Then it has an old west gunslinger/ronin samurai in space vibe that I love, along with the huge Lone Wolf and Cub aspect. And there's the whole Mandalorian culture that I've loved since I read Karen Traviss' books years ago. I hated the pacifist spin the animated Clone Wars put on them that killed the warrior culture that permeated Legends.

Nostalgia is part of it too though. There have been so many little bits of Legends brought into the show that have made me so happy. It's so much fun to catch all the little details that tie into the animated series, books, and movies. I think I was sold on the series right when I saw that disintegration rifle (I realize that's not what it's called) that looks like the gun from the Holiday Special.

This last episode was the Boba Fett from Legends, the feared bounty hunter that was hinted at in the movies but that we were never shown. Nobody around me, even other Star Wars fans, have been the level of excited about his reappearance as I have, ever since that first fleeting glimpse of Temuera Morrison. I was watching some Youtube reaction videos a couple days ago because I was starting to feel like I must be the only one, and it was amazing to see everybody reacting exactly the way I did to this whole episode.

message 17: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 271 comments Totally agree on the bringing star wars back - why the movies had to diverge from the stories written after star wars is beyond me. Those stories were great and made the aftermath of the death of Darth Vader so much better than the movies did. To say the movie was disappointing was to be mild.

I love the gunslinger type of movies too and seeing the Boba Fett ship brought back so many good memories. Oh! I feel a rewatch of Star Wars coming on me. Since Xmas will be very quiet this year - maybe a marathon is in order.

I am uncertain what it is you are disagreeing about. You were more eloquent in why, but pretty much you seem to be agreeing that the Mandalorian is making Star Wars fun again. I am old enough that I saw the originals in the Theater when they came out and it was... well Epic.

The Prequels left me kind of flat, The last three were better but still not up to the Originals, which admittedly is a difficult thing to do. Rogue One was an exception I think because it was allowed to break out and be something new. And the less said about Solo the better. Nice premise, but the timing seemed off all through the movie.

The Mandalorian is breaking new ground and keeping the feel of the franchise. And it is fun. Just plain fun to watch.

I think you expressed yourself very well Caillen. No confusion on my part. I enjoyed your perspective and it made me remember other good things in the movies.

Bruce I just started The Mandalorian. Good so far. Not as good as the first 3 films (episodes 4,5,6) and Rogue One, but still good, and better than the prequels and 7,8,9.

Christmas 2021 is what I read. It's still happening, just delayed. No clue where they'll go with the story. Maybe they'll focus more Bo-Katan and the Mandalorians.

Could be. The only thing I could think at the end was, well that's a wrap, good work everyone.

message 27: by Midiain (new)

Midiain | 401 comments Yeah, it definitely felt that way. Screen Rant says it's been confirmed that there will be a season 3, and there's still a whole lot unresolved between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan.

I did not, I will have to go back and look for it. Thx for pointing it out

So after watching it, I knew that the Book of Boba Fett was coming, but that is a nice teaser.

Sandy | 271 comments It was a good wrapup - really brought back some happy memories. The Man has gotten some serious power. I really liked the characters - hope some are back in the next story.

message 30: by Hans (new)

Hans | 192 comments Man, the second season of The Mandalorian really doubled down on the good old Star Wars nostalgia and had a lot of what the new trilogy was missing. And all the cameos, awesome! Although Moff Gideon was slightly underwhelming as villains go, I really liked the wrapup and am excited to see where this will go in the future, now that the first story arc seems to be completed.

I'm also stoked for the Ahsoka and Boba Fett spinoffs. Really liked Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka and it was nice to see Boba Fett actually be a character and not just a cool but mute armor.

I thought Moff Gideon was a good bad guy. Arrogant, always looking for an angle, but not overwhelmingly powerful. Most of the really powerful bad guys wouldn't have survived really long in the Empire. The Emperor would have been worried about their loyalty and would have found ways to get rid of them.

Hans | 192 comments Dj wrote: "Hans wrote: "Man, the second season of The Mandalorian really doubled down on the good old Star Wars nostalgia and had a lot of what the new trilogy was missing. And all the cameos, awesome! Althou..."

Ok, let me rephrase: In general, he was a good villain, Giancarlo Esposito always is. He just wasn't present enough and in the end not much of a challenge for Mando and his gang. I think the season could have used another episode or two to really establish him as a proper threat.

message 33: by Jerry-Book (new)

Jerry-Book | 86 comments Well the “Dark Troopers” put up a better fight than the hapless “Storm Troopers”. However, Luke mowed the “Dark Troopers” down much too easily. Especially, after just one of them almost took out Mando. They did appear to be a carbon copy of Dr. Who’s second most famous foes, the “Cybermen”. So, you can’t use the Mandalorian “Darksaber” unless you win it in battle from its owner. This seems to be a concept ripped off from the “Elder Wand” weapon in the Harry Potter series. The “Elder Wand” would only give its allegiance to the one who had defeated its prior owner. Voldemort killed Snape to win its allegiance not realizing Draco was the prior owner and not Snape.

message 34: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 271 comments Luke was just a bit too young for me. They could have aged him a little more. But other than that they did a good job of writing him in.

message 35: by Midiain (new)

Midiain | 401 comments I wish Gideon had had more time for character development but hopefully we'll see more of him next season. Giancarlo Esposito is fantastic and it'd be a shame to see him relegated to so little screen time if they're done with the character now.

Storm trooper armor is a joke and it always has been. It's like it's a uniform more than actual armor for all the protection it gives them. If Mando had the Darksaber when he fought the dark trooper he would've had no trouble at all and I don't think that Luke would've been able to beat one of them without the Force and his lightsaber. The only thing that bothered me about Luke mowing the troopers down was that a lot of them seemed to be patiently waiting their turns to fight him instead of all attacking at once. There were several times when they could've shot him when his attention was on another trooper. But that's a standard movie convention so I guess I can't complain too much.

I don't think the Darksaber has any kind of restrictions on who can use it, it's that Mandalorians were traditionally a warrior culture and who got to be Mandalore was decided by combat. Before the whole pacifist royalty thing at least. I could've sworn that Sabine Wren just gave the Darksaber to Bo-Katan without any combat though.

message 36: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Murrell | 604 comments Caillen, The Court Guesser wrote: "Storm trooper armor is a joke and it always has been."

It's not that storm trooper armor is a joke, it's always been the heroes have PLOT armor that debuffs all those around them. It's something that I begrudgingly accept about the Star Wars franchise. A sacrifice to get a family franchise that truly is for the whole family.

message 37: by Midiain (new)

Midiain | 401 comments As much as I want to refute that, I really can't. There's a vast amount that has to be willfully overlooked in exchange for the characters and mythology that I love so much.

message 38: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 271 comments I always thought that storm trooper armor was just a way to cover up the fact that all the troopers looked alike ( which is a slap to people that humans were cloned ). Besides when you can make 1000's more - why spend money on keeping them safe.

Since he is still alive, I am not sure they are done with him playing the villain. He has that smary way of turning people against each other. And if not for the unexpected guest star he would have carried the day. Deus ex X-Wing

I believe that the Dark Saber concept came in the comics, which might be before Harry Potter. Although the concept of having to win a weapon through combat has been used many times and many places before.

Shortly after the fall of the Empire, I would suspect they used an image from Return of the Jedi for the CGI model. It is just a guess though.

I thought so too but my son - who is into video thinks they used him and aged him backwards - I didn't think it looked a lot like him - more like someone of similar facial construction that they cgi'd and dubbed the voice over. He was in the credits.

Oh yeah, he is too young, Mark Hamill broke his nose and got a scar between the filming of Star Wars and Empire. Happened while he was filming Corvette Summer. It is missing in the CGI rendering.
