I'd second Walkaway. Maybe The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi, although I think that's the start of a series, or The Rise & Fall of D.O.D.O by Neal Stephenson.
A friend of mine just recommended Rosewater (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...)...Also, I'll mention The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. I think we've had it come up in the past but I haven't seen it lately.
Books recommended at GeekGirlCon this weekend:The Bird King by G. Willow Wilson
A Bad Deal for the Whole Galaxy by Alex White
Salvation Day by Kali Wallace
A Pale Light in the Black by K. B. Wagers
Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes

New Suns (short stories) edited by Nisi Shawl
I may have a few more to add to this list later.
Additional titles from GGC. I attended the "Librarians Recommend" panel and while I don't know much about any of these, they are all supposed to be "the best new, inclusive, sci-fi and fantasy reads".The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Empire of Dreams by Rae Carson
The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho
The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis

FWIW, Goodread's Readers Choice list for the best Science Fiction of 2019 is here:https://www.goodreads.com/choiceawards/best-science-fiction-books-2019. There is some overlap between books on this list and books recommended by the librarians at GeekGirlCon.

I'll suggest Walkaway by Cory Doctorow. I've not read it but my husband says it's good. And it's a utopia, which might make for an interesting contrast to some of our other books.
