Kate (kathrynlouwca) Let's face it, when it comes to the readathon, it is all about the books. And being the book lovers that we all are, you know you have that pile of books that you are looking at reading during the event. So this thread is the place for you to share those reading aspirations with the rest of the group and link the shelves you have created or the books you are planning on reading.

This year I don't have too many books picked out. I am hoping to read Artemis Fowl, Queen of Shadows, and Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds (ETA: Finished this early).

After that, I will see what challenges I still need to complete on Bingo and see what else I can find to read.

I never pick many books. I just try to finish the ones I have going. If I get stuck or bored, I can always pick another one from my (once again enormous) TBR pile at home.
So for this weekend I plan to:
- do one chapter of Handboek EMDR bij kinderen en jongeren by Renée Beer Handboek EMDR bij kinderen en jongeren
- finish? American Gods by Neil Gaiman American Gods
- start 1q84 - Boek een april-juni by Haruki Murakami 1Q84

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 572 comments Alright, I decided to divide my readathon stack into categories this time around. The audio is for in-between, same for graphic novels. Otherwise, read B and choose one for D, E or F.

A) Audio books (for breakfast and social media updates)
King Solomon's Mines (Allan Quatermain, #1) by H. Rider Haggard (not the right edition, I have a 1h 53 min full cast BBC radio play)
Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë (again, couldn't find the right edition, but at least the cover is the same. Audio - 6h 27 min)

B) Seasonal reads
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (ongoing read, use for one sprint only to avoid severe mental fatigue early on)
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (priority!)
The Eye of Hastur A Choosable Adventure (Eldritch Duology Book 1) by Scott King (for fun)

C) Graphic novels - also seasonal - read some, not all
The Promised Neverland, Vol. 5 by Kaiu Shirai
Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson Moon Called, Volume 1 by David Lawrence
Dream Country (The Sandman, #3) by Neil Gaiman Season of Mists (The Sandman, #4) by Neil Gaiman
Welcome to Lovecraft (Locke & Key, #1) by Joe Hill Head Games (Locke & Key, #2) by Joe Hill Crown of Shadows (Locke & Key, #3) by Joe Hill Keys to the Kingdom (Locke & Key, #4) by Joe Hill

D) - continue a series (choose one)
Fates (I Bring the Fire, #4) by C. Gockel , The Devil's Due (Out of Time #4) by Monique Martin , A Symphony of Echoes (The Chronicles of St. Mary's, #2) by Jodi Taylor , Lirael (Abhorsen, #2) by Garth Nix , The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater , Siege and Storm (Grisha Verse, #2) by Leigh Bardugo , Lady of Magick (The Midnight Queen series) by Sylvia Izzo Hunter

or

E) - start a new one (again, only one, please, note to self, do not start more than one more series!)
Rivers of London (Peter Grant, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch , In the Night Garden (The Orphan's Tales, #1) by Catherynne M. Valente , Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman , The Last Librarian (The Justar Journal Book 1) by Brandt Legg , The Blade Itself (The First Law, #1) by Joe Abercrombie , Murder Of A Werewolf (A Brimstone Witch Mystery, #1) by April Fernsby

or

F) read a shortish free standing book
The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick , Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk , Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig , The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky , Artemis by Andy Weir

The rest of the family, on the other hand, have a simpler approach.
The Spouse will be reading
The City & The City TV tie-in by China Miéville
and some of the graphic novels (Locke & Key, Sandman #4, The Promised Neverland #5) and maybe make a start on
Alan Turing The Enigma by Andrew Hodges

The Firstborn aims to make good progress on her ongoing reads:
The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot and Northern Lights (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman
and then read: The Promised Neverland, Vol. 5 by Kaiu Shirai
and maybe reread Prince of the Elves (Amulet, #5) by Kazu Kibuishi and Nimona by Noelle Stevenson .

The Youngest has two box sets and he means to read them all:
Pokémon Adventures Diamond & Pearl / Platinum Box Set by Hidenori Kusaka and CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS BOX SET (10 BOOKS), DAV PILKEY by Scholastic .
There's also Dog Man:
Dog Man Unleashed (Dog Man, #2) by Dav Pilkey and Dog Man and Cat Kid (Dog Man, #4) by Dav Pilkey .

They have an audio dramatization as well. I've been listening to that this week. Haley Joel Osment is one of the performers, as is Kate Mulgrew (CPT Janeway for the Trekkies in the group). Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Gabriel Rodriguez also perform.

It's been pretty good. I'm halfway through it at present.

I'm not a millennial, but I'm sure I'll love it. I've listened to an audible exclusive short story from the series and it was right up my alley. I got the first book as a kindle freebie, and I've picked up three more second hand but sadly none of them are book two. lol
I must admit I'm leaning strongly towards starting this series, even if I should focus on finishing some series instead!

Lena's October 2018 Read-a-Thon Book Pile

message 13: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Okay, I've gone through my books and the BINGO board and I think that I've got a list that is both doable and will get me to the blackout that I want. LOL

The Works of Edgar Allen sic Poe by Edgar Allan Poe - (KINDLE) - fits: Short Story & read something you consider Spooky
Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1) by Eoin Colfer - (KINDLE) - fits: Read Book with a Male Protagonist
Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4) by Sarah J. Maas - (AUDIBLE) - fits: Book in a series, Book with Female Protagonist, Audiobook, Person on the cover
Lord Wraybourne's Bethrothed A Romance of Regency England (Renfrew / Kyle 02) by Jo Beverley - (PHYSICAL BOOK) - Beautiful Cover & Physical Book.

These are subject to change, but for this moment, these are my plans.

I’m a slow reader so I don’t think I’ve ever finished more than one book. I do try to finish one book before starting the next but I have other books ready in case I’m really not in the mood for the book I’m reading.

I tend to finish anywhere between 3 and 8 books, but I always mostly ready smaller books - either in page number or size of font and graphic novels. It also hugely depends on how fast you generally read, how many hours you actually spend reading and especially how far along in the reading you get! I certainly read a lot slower after 20 hours than I do in the first couple of hours :)

But the most important is to have fun! One of my best readathons I read the least because I spent so much time chatting and cheering :)

I usually have ongoing books going into the readathon so I try to finish those. I try to listen a couple of short audiobooks. Also graphic novels make you feel accomplished! For the July readathon I completely read 10 books; graphic novels and audiobooks, one poetry book. April I think I read 1 completely and partially read a few. Page count is fun to keep track of instead of number of books. :)

I tend to read a bit slower than some so the most I have finished is 2 I think, BUT I am such a mood reader that more often than not I switch between 4 or 5 books that are currently suited to my mood throughout the entire read-a-thon.

message 35: by Merry (last edited Oct 19, 2018 10:05AM) (new)

Merry (lettersfromthelighthouse) | 24 comments To be honest, my 'prep' for this readathon was just to pile up a lot of short books from my shelves (pics & short comment on my blog) because I'm a terrible mood reader and have no idea what I'll feel like in twelve hours' time.
I want to finish some of the books I've started (most notably Reaper Man and Citizen: An American Lyric) and make progress with the other two on my currently reading shelf (Les Misérables and Melmoth the Wanderer), but I have learned the hard way that reading one very long, very dense 19th century novel for the entire readathon is A Very Bad Idea.
I'll probably stay away from graphic novels and ebooks (don't own any of either and the selection at my local library isn't great), but an audiobook and/or a manga might still happen. And depending on what I pick from the neverending TBR pile, I even have a chance of getting the bingo blackout. :D
