Josh Willmes | 12 comments I have a research paper due next month. It is on Lt. Col. Rufus Dawes and the 6th Wisconsin of the famed Iron Brigade. Any suggestions of books or sources on this subject?

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 1259 comments What a great subject! I've read these two books on the subject, Nolan's is one of my favourites.

The Iron Brigade A Military History by Alan T. Nolan by Alan T. Nolan

The Men Stood Like Iron How the Iron Brigade Won Its Name by L. Herdegen by Lance Herdegen

I recently purchased this book but have not read it yet:

The Iron Brigade in Civil War and Memory by Lance Herdegen by Lance Herdegen

I second that--the Nolan book is really good.

For the Iron Brigade at Gettysburg -- from the other side of the battle line, check out:

Covered with Glory The 26th North Carolina Infantry at the Battle of Gettysburg by Rod Gragg Covered with Glory: The 26th North Carolina Infantry at the Battle of Gettysburg by Rod Gragg

Josh Willmes | 12 comments The Alan Nolan book is wonderful. I started reading it over the weekend.

Josh Willmes | 12 comments Thank you for the suggestion on the 26th North Carolina manray. I will include there story in my research. The largest regiment in the confederate army with 840 men. After the first day 214 men were standing. Tragic story.

Sarah Bierle (gazette665) | 111 comments Gettysburg The Last Invasion by Allen C. Guelzo
This book has 9 indexed references to the 6th Wisconsin's at Gettysburg.

Gettysburg A Testing of Courage by Noah Andre Trudeau
This one has 10 indexed references to the regiment.

I know these books are not specifically on the Iron Brigade or 6th Wisconsin, but maybe they'll be helpful if you have to write about their role at Gettysburg.

Here's a couple of links for websites that might be helpful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6th_Wisc...

http://www.gettysburg.stonesentinels....

http://www.n-ssa.org/NORTHWEST/6WIS/6...

http://www.wisconsinbattleflags.com/u...

https://www.facebook.com/pages/6th-Wi...

Some the re-enactor links may be helpful if you want to talk with some folks that have researched this regiment and actually portray it at living history events. Most re-enactors are very friendly and love to answer questions, so don't be shy about contacting them.

Best of luck on your report!

Sarah Bierle (gazette665) | 111 comments Hi Josh,
Glad the internet links will be helpful. I thought of two more that you might want to check. They've been very helpful when I was searching not well-known soldiers/civilians in Virginia.

http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-so...

http://www.findagrave.com/

And you may want to check Wisconsin archives and libraries. I've found a lot of helpful info for my area of Civil War study in state archives and libraries.

Not sure how many details you'll need, but those archives and the links for the databases may "rabbit-trail" to some great primary sources.

Happy research!

Josh Willmes | 12 comments Sarah the link to the 6th Wisconsin brigade on Facebook was great. They already replied with some very interesting facts! Thank you.

Sarah Bierle (gazette665) | 111 comments You're welcome! Will you publish your report when it is finished? I did a lengthy historical report in college and have considered publishing it, but haven't actually done it yet.

message 14: by Josh (new)

Josh Willmes | 12 comments I haven't decided yet. If I do, you'll be the first to know.

Kerry Hotaling | 73 comments Josh - Google "official records of the war of rebellion" - click on "Official Records - ehistory-The Ohio State University" A book will appear. Go to index. Go down to volume XXVII part 1. Go to page 275-277. There you will find the official report of Colonel Dawes. Good stuff.
