Welcome to A Long Story Short. We are a used vintage bookstore located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. We really wanted to start a book club and since most of our guests come from all over the country, we decided online was the way to go! We wanted to create a community of book-lovers to celebrate the joy of reading with! Check out our group and join if you think it is for you! Here is rundown on the Folders on our Discussion Page...
RULES AND GUIDELINES:
This is a series of threads started by the moderators containing information the group should have.
(NAME OF BOOK) OF THE MONTH: (ex: THE NIGHT CIRCUS - Jan 2019)
This is where we will discuss the current book that we are reading. On the first of the month we post the "first impressions/pre-read" spoiler free thread for each book and on the 15th we open up the "book discussion" thread. We have determined that this prolongs the discussion we have, protects those among us who are very sensitive to spoilers, and encourages greater participation as people do not feel as rushed. For the "first impressions" thread there should be ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS. It is merely a place to discuss who is joining in on the read, why you're interested in this book, what your first impressions of the first few chapters are, your first impression of the characters or writing style, etc. THEN the "Discussion" thread will be fair game for spoilers! DO NOT LOOK AT THE DISCUSSION THREAD IF YOU ARE NOT FINISHED. This is where readers can discuss their final thoughts on the ending and any other specific aspects of the story line, characters, etc.
All Book Discussion Threads will remain open, even for books we have finished in previous months, so the discussion can be joined at anytime. Maybe you are new to the group and are interested in a book we already read. No problem! Still read it and leave your thoughts on its appropriate thread! All book discussions can be found at the bottom of our discussion page in chronological order!
MONTHLY BOOK NOMINATIONS:
Each month we will accept nominations of books to read the following month. Nominations will take place the second week of the month and voting will be the following week. Nominations must be for a novel with at least 170 pages long through the majority of editions. We will not accept nominations for any novels from authors we have recently read to ensure we have diversity. Nominations for books that are a part of a series may be made as long as it is the first book in the series OR able to be a stand alone novel too. We would not be reading the entire series, only the first book. That way, if the reader enjoys the series and wants to continue with it they may while the rest of the group continues on with something new. If you are an author, please do not nominate your own book, however, you may advertise it once under BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS. All nominations made need to be appropriate for many age levels
Voting will occur here under the Groups Polls or on our Facebook Page (A Long Story Short Co) and will be open for one week. You will receive a message letting you know voting is live. The book with the most votes will be the next book of the month that the group will read and discuss.
BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS:
This folder is open for three purposes...
1. If you have read another book outside of the chosen "Book of the Month" and you loved it, you may recommend it here. Do not add any spoiler on what happens in the book. You may put a brief summary of the story (maybe the blurb from the cover), and why you liked it.
2. If you are looking for suggestions for your next read. You may ask here. Say you are looking for a good mystery, make a post asking for mystery recommendations. To respond to someone's suggestion request, please just respond with the title/author you are suggesting. You may utilize the GoodReads feature that allows you to do this.
3. If you are an author or blogger, you may recommend your work under this folder. You may make only ONE post per novel, article, etc. If you post more than once, it will be deleted. Any spam will be deleted. If an advertisement is made anywhere other than this folder, it will be deleted. If a moderator feels the work that has been recommended is inappropriate, it will be deleted. If this folder is taken advantage of by anyone trying to sell their own work, you will be banned from this book club.

MEMBER CHAT:
This folder is for any chitchat members have that doesn't really belong elsewhere. Book stats, pictures of our pets while we read, hopes for future years, this is the folder for all of that. Start a conversation! It's a great way to get to know your fellow book lovers! Please keep it appropriate though.
