Yes, I think he felt he could absorb her anger and grief if she expressed it outwardly and physically against him.
Agree. Gage knew she was going to explode from all the grief and stress she was holding inside. He was providing her with an outlet.
She was like a pressure cooker ready to blow and he knew she needed to get it all out. It was weird at first until she actually attacked him. Then I got it.
