Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey

Can we just appreciate this cover? It is so ott you'd recognize the genre standing a mile away.

Sam (aramsamsam) 5. Magic's Price (Valdemar Last Herald-Mage #3) by Mercedes Lackey

Magic's Price by Mercedes Lackey

Book 3 turned out to be the weakest installment in the series. Still, I loved the whole experience. Instant favourites.

Sam (aramsamsam) 6. Luck in the Shadows (Nightrunner, #1) by Lynn Flewelling

Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling

This is really sad: I dnfed after 210 pages. I'm just not sufficiently intrigued or invested in the characters to carry on. Also, this edition has really small print and narrow margins so is unpleasant to read. I might try again with an edition in translation, but this never has been translated (like so many female SFF).

Sam (aramsamsam) 7. Zwei sehr ernsthafte Damen

Zwei sehr ernsthafte Damen by Jane Bowles

I also dnfed another book the same day after 47 pages. I heard great things about Jane Bowles work, but her style just isn't my cup of tea. I felt distanced from the characters and couldn't tell them apart. (I own a very beautiful hardcover edition of this, so I'm extra sorry to let it go like this. But someone else will appreciate this more than I could.)

Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter

I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU ... broke me entirely on its last page.

Sam (aramsamsam) 9. The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin

The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin

A heartfelt, melancholic read. The skips in time were a bit irritating, but I really liked the concept of the dreamers and the Ashsean's non-violent ways.

Sam (aramsamsam) 10. Die Magier Seiner Majestät Roman by Zen Cho

Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho

I expected to love this, but in the end, it was just okay. The plot felt convoluted, and even though I enjoyed Prunella as a character, I felt like I didn't get to know anybody. Many times, I found myself going back over the past few sentences because a detail was mentioned in passing like it had been before, and I was not aware of it having been there all the time. Very confusing.

Sam (aramsamsam) 11. Alle Roboter-Geschichten by Isaac Asimov

The Complete Robot (Asimov) by Isaac Asimov

As is to be expected with an anthology, some stories were more to my liking than others. The problem with a thematic compilation is that similarities in structure and storytelling become all the more obvious. I was ready to give the whole book only 2 stars (mostly out of fatigue) but the final story "The Bicentennial Man" bumped the rating up again.

Sam (aramsamsam) 12. Gardens of the Moon (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, #1) by Steven Erikson

Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson

I DNFed this epic fantasy only 52 pages into it, but with the determination to switch to the german edition later this year. I had some trouble enjoying the story and complex world building and I bet it was that on top of getting to know all the places, names and lots of military strategy I had to read it all in a foreign language. I definitely want to continue reading, but this time in a library copy. Guess you'll see the result in my Virtual Mount TBR log :)
