Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2603 comments This book was written in 1947, the year I was born. When I was a teen, my mother recommended it to me but I had so much else I was reading that, I was sure, was much better. (This is classified by some as Young Adult but it would be interesting to many ages.) I've put it off all this time and I'm sorry I did. This is a lovely book, written in the late '40s but about the life of Katherine Mary beginning in 1907. A little romanticized in the beginning I felt but I passed that off to era in which it was written. The hardships were mentioned but I felt they were almost glossed over. Not true as the story went on.

Katherine Mary O'Fallon from Boston travels to the northwest Canada to stay with her Uncle John. She's very happy there and meets Sergeant Mike Flannigan of the Canadian Mounties. They fall in love, Kathy is very young and after a a year or so, they marry and off they go to Mike's station in the near wilderness where they live with Indians (Cree and Blackfeet mostly), fur-trappers, and 'Breeds.

Everyone I've ever talked to have claimed this as one of their favorite books. I certainly understand why. It is populated with wonderful characters and is a read I didn't want to put down.

Theresa | 15750 comments So glad you liked it! I have super fond memories of this book, and in fact it was a favorite re-read up to my early 30s. Might have to revisit now that I'm old, but so much of it is so very vivid in my mind.
