V.Q.E: The Tale of an Indian Physician in the United Kingdom of the 1980's by Vivek Gumaste is an interesting memoir that brilliantly documents the story of a young graduate fresh from medical school in Britain in the 1980’s. Twenty-six years old and an ambitious and opinionated young man, Vivek Gumaste arrived in Britain from India after completing medical school. His dream was to prepare himself to get across to the US. But after two years, what happened?

In these pages, readers are offered images of Britain in the 1980's and through the lens of a young Indian. The author describes Britain as he saw it and what it felt like to be a physician from the old British India colony. In a language that is poignant and a style that is atmospheric, this author describes the plight of Indian immigrants seeking greener pastures in the UK at that time, shows the injustices they suffered, and the different ways they were exploited by the country that once colonized them.

V.Q.E: The Tale of an Indian Physician in the United Kingdom of the 1980's is spellbinding and the author uses a sense of humor to enrich the narrative. The prose is beautiful and it features a unique phraseology, a style that reflects the author’s culture. This book reveals a lot about the UK in the 1980’s and the author’s observations are written with great clarity. The social and political commentaries add flesh to the writing and allow the setting to come out strongly through the narrative. This is a memoir with great potential to both inform and entertain readers.
