I got no idea... more info needed. From the first paragaphs I got the impression he was French but then the paragraph about WWII made me doubt that.
Was he German?
Joseph Beuys?(that's about the only name that pops up, I know he was injured in the war but I thought it was his back not a leg...)
I'm not gonna guess because I did a google search. This is a HUGELY tough one. And I am guessing that many people may not have heard of him.
I believe you are correct, Ellen. I’m curious as to how many people do know this artist. Honestly, I hadn’t ever heard of him. (There’s a clue!)Not that I am an art aficionado, but I found him in the list of famous artists.
Note: I am traveling and don’t have access to my PC where I saved the link to his biography. I will recognize the name when someone guesses it but I don’t remember much more information about him. I should be back home in about 5-6 days. thank you for your patience with me and my not-so-high-tech phone!
Heather wrote: "Honestly, I hadn’t ever heard of him. (There’s a clue!)... I found him in the list of famous artists..."Definitely a key figure in late 20th century. Conceptual artists, given the nature of their practice, tend to be unfamiliar to the general population, even when those folks are interested in art.
He's also German and I am not sure where most of us call home, but it is less likely that we will be familiar with "foreign" contemporary artists. It's different with past art and dead artists, but this one is still very much alive.
Fascinated to see what others think and discover.
Can't be Paul Klee: he died before WWII started. And he lived the last years of his life in Switzerland. No this is a completely unknown artist (at least for me it is ;-)
I'm sorry this is so difficult, but on the other hand, not so sorry because you all are too well-versed in art! Here is another clue taken from Wikipedia
" He visited the south of France, where the landscape inspired him to a close study of the works of Cézanne, and he developed a great interest in principles of harmony and proportion such as the golden section."
Please don't apologize ,Heather. And am definitely not one of the people who knows so much about art.But joining this group has been great.
Searching out google for the hints is fun.
Thanks for the effort.
Have we given up???Here is another clue from Wikipedia:
The death of his father in 1932 severed _______________'s last bonds with Germany. He was rejected from Nazi Germany on account of being a 'degenerate', because his painting style was associated with Cubism – an art movement incompatible with Nazi Germany's ideals. In 1935 when he attempted to sell paintings while visiting Berlin, the police tried to arrest him. He was able to flee the country with the help of his friend Christian Zervos.
Dirk wrote: "Sorry Heather, really a though one!
I haven't even heard of this Christian Zervos..."
I haven't heard of him, either.
Another clue: Initials of his name are H.H.
You have really stymied folks with this one, Heather. I'm still not saying, although it would have been easier for me had you mentioned Christian Zervos in the original clue.Or should I go ahead and give the name?
Thanks Ellen. How did you go about your research to figure it out? What did you look for from the clues I left?
Ellen wrote: "Hans Haacke. This one was a huge and mind-stretching challenge!"I'm interested to know how you came up with that name... This is my source:

I had posted the bio for Hans Hartung. Are they the same person? (might seem like a silly question, sorry!)
